Rolled out last year, BMW’s dreamy R 12 G/S adventure bike presented an incredibly compelling combination of punchy 1,170cc boxer power and ’80s-era Paris-Dakar looks.

But just as the retro-styled R 12 and R 12 nineT street bikes are ripe for custom modification, so too is their dirt-hungry sibling.

The R 12 G/S was tempting enough, but this new aftermarket treatment makes it damn near irresistible.

Tackling the challenge is Schmerikon, Switzerland-based VTR Customs, whose Herzberg 12 treatment is the most jaw-dropping imaginable.

The fact that it’s actually a purchasable package rather than a one-off only adds to the appeal.

Swiss bliss

Let’s start with the name, which the custom-tuned aces at Bike Exif explain is a portmanteau blending the German word for heart (Herz) and arguably the world’s gnarliest enduro race (the Erzberg Rodeo).

The moniker is more clever than accurate, as this beefcake isn’t exactly built for that sort of challenge, though it is the most off-road capable BMW Heritage bike (keyword: “heritage”).

Among the most noticeable modifications is the overhaul of the cockpit, now outfitted with a UniT Garage windshield, handguards and headlight cover, all done up in yellow plexiglass that recalls golden age Paris-Dakar rally bikes.

Other notable UniT Garage components include a milled aluminum spring preload handwheel and stainless steel intake covers.

Even if off-roading isn’t really on your radar, the VTR Customs touch captures attention from every angle.

The bike looks back both literally and figuratively with retro-round bar-end High Sider Montana 2 mirrors, while its turn signals are as minimal as can be thanks to Kellerman Atto Micro indicators.

The short tail conversion and side-mounted plate holder only add to the streamlined, race-oriented attitude of the rear.

The Herzberg is sure to sound just as good as it looks thanks to black-coated exhaust manifolds wrapped in heat tape and culminating in a street-legal Akrapovič/UniT Garage high-performance silencer.

Where the rubber meets the (off)road, this bike marries the eye-popping finish of big bold Gold Kineo wheels (21 inches front and 18 inches rear) with beefy, knobby Heidenau tires.

The grand finishing touch comes courtesy of Freuler AG, which applied the sumptuous throwback brown and blue paint, smoky tones complemented by a dark brown leather seat, black-anodized forks, and black powder-coated valve covers and footrest assemblies.

The overall effect is the heady promise of adventure far off the beaten path, wrapped in a package sure to turn heads and widen smiles even if it never leaves the street.

Availability and pricing

VTR Customs offers three conversion levels (Small, Medium and Large) that progressively stack up the aftermarket modifications, starting at €4,900, roughly $5,644 USD.

Of course, you need to supply the R 12 G/S to begin with; the 2026 base model starts at $16,995.
