It was only a matter of time before Icebreaker, the New Zealand-based maker of fine merino wool clothing, got into cycling gear. After all, merino is a perfect material for cycling – breathable, stink-free and warm or cool when it needs to be. The new GT Cycling line was worth the wait. We recently put the Cadence Jersey and Circuit Short through their paces on some early spring rides.
As the name implies, the GT jerseys and shorts are made from Icebreaker’s lighter weight GT merino, which is incredibly soft. They add a touch of Lycra for the right amount of stretch and quick-drying characteristics. The Cadence Jersey has slightly heavier merino on the front and lighter on the back for the ideal combination for a fast forward sport. A gripper hem keeps the jersey snug so it doesn’t flap, full length zipper provides limitless venting options, and the three rear pockets are smartly placed for easy access to your mini-pump, patch kit and energy bar. Perhaps most refreshing is the styling, devoid of logos or text, all too prevalent on most cycling jerseys. The slash of accent color is urban and sleek.
The Circuit Shorts are hands-down the most comfortable cycling shorts we’ve worn. Most full-Lycra cycling shorts can be too grippy and ride up on the thighs. The six-panel stitched merino Circuits stay put with just the right amount of stretch. The real magic is in the padded chamois. A bit bulky off the bike, it disappears while riding and even after hours in the saddle, didn’t chafe and provided the perfect amount of cush. Reflective accents on the back are a thoughtful touch and the center panel is all Lycra, where you need it and won’t pill from friction with the saddle.
Icebreaker’s foray into cycling clothing gives racers and weekend warriors alike a stylish, natural alternative and stands apart from the spandex crowd.
