What Makes the Perfect Hoodie? Jet Engine Technology, of Course

Vollebak’s new Ceramic Hoodie features the same key ingredient found in jet engines and missile nose cones.

Based in London, Vollebak has never hesitated to look far beyond the obvious when sourcing materials for its apparel. So when it came to crafting a tough but comfy hoodie, the brand eschewed the usual suspects in favor of a material used in jet engines and missile nose cones. Like the T-shirt and Baselayer that preceded it, the new Ceramic Hoodie boasts an exterior crafted from, yes, ceramics.

According to Vollebak, ceramic is not only smooth, flat and thinner than human hair, it’s also tougher than every material on earth save diamonds. That means this hoodie, constructed with 60,000 ceramic particles at Switzerland’s always-innovative Schoeller Textiles AG, might be the most abrasion-resistant garment you ever don.

It’s also super stretchy, thanks to 15 percent elastene fabric, and cozy, courtesy of a brushed fleece interior. Throw in the fact that it’s simultaneous warm, breathable and wicking, and you’ve got a technical sports hoodie that, from home to plane to the great outdoors, is simply good to go.
