The Buff is about as simple as it gets. It’s just a tube of fabric roughly 18″ long, made to be the Optimus Prime of headgear (Did anyone else just think of Megan Fox?). It can transform into a balaclava, a beanie, a headband, or a variety of other configurations. I’ve owned a regular one for almost a year and use it all the time at the gym and when hiking to keep my Neanderthal-sweat out of my eyes. I got my hands on the new Merino Wool Buff, which hasn’t been released yet, and it is a great upgrade.

For starters, it’s obviously made of Merino Wool, a favorite fabric of mine. Merino Wool is renewable, warm in the winter, cool in summer, and it doesn’t get the lovely funk that synthetics do. Plus, the edges are finished on the Merino Buff, unlike the original, and it is almost six inches longer. These extra six inches allow even more versatility in its use. Is it sexy headwear? Absolutely not. But for the outdoorsman, it’s a great addition. Check out the video below and you’ll become a believer, too.

Cost: $27.00 (Available August 09′)
