As our friend Wesley Snipes once proudly imparted: always bet on black. TaylorMade heeded his advice with their R1 Black ($350), a sinister version of their much-lauded white R1 driver. In either color, the R1 is a vaunted weapon on the fairway, almost entirely customizable to give players flexibility in shot weight locations, face angle, and the pièce de résistance, loft angle. That’s huge, when you consider that TaylorMade says 80 percent of golfers are using the wrong loft angle on every drive. You can argue over hue, but there’s no denying its success: the club’s been used to win 16 worldwide golf tourneys this year. In the meantime, we’ll be admiring its GP color scheme. Check out our breakdown above for the specifics.
