Is This Sleek New Benchmade Bugout Simply the Best EDC Knife Yet?

Only Benchmade could craft a knife like the Bugout, and only Benchmade could dial that same knife up to 11.

Since its launch in 2017, the Benchmade Bugout has consistently been lauded, by Gear Patrol itself and others, as one of the best EDC knives one can buy, if not the very best.

Naturally Benchmade has reimagined it all sorts of ways, introducing Mini and Custom options, swapping the handle material and blade steel, experimenting with everything from Cerakote to Richlite and more.

The new Vapyr is inarguably the slimmest and arguably the very best Bugout ever made.

As stunning as so many of those spinoffs are, however, none could have prepared us for the latest edition of the everyday superstar.

Because the brand-new Bugout Vapyr is a minimalist masterpiece of high-end steel and ultrathin, ultralight construction.

Lighter, better, faster, stronger

Beyond its darkly dazzling looks, the Vapyr boasts two major upgrades, one of which has never been part of the equation before.

So let’s start with that element, the fact that this knife is a whopping 33 percent thinner than a traditional Bugout.

As you’d imagine, the focus here is on the handle, two 6061-T6 anodized black aluminum handles that are almost impossibly slim.

Measuring 0.282 inches wide, this streamlined handle naturally means weight savings, making this knife even lighter than the impossibly feathery 1.8-ounce CF-Elite Bugout, as the Vapyr comes in at 1.72 ounces.

The only way to fully appreciate the handle’s thinness is to compare it to a classic Bugout’s, as you see above.

Is there a practical upside here? Not necessarily, but just like Bulgari’s renowned ever-slimmer Octo Finissimo watches, it is still impressive to see Benchmade flex.

The second upgrade, meanwhile, has more of a precedent but also more of a tangible benefit, as the Vapyr boasts a 3.25-inch premium CPM-MagnaCut super steel drop-point blade with a stealth black Cerakote finish (plus a bit of grip-improving spine jimping to boot).

Benchmade always proudly advertises its blade steel on the offside of the knife, and the Vapyr is no exception. Note the grip-improving jimping on the spine, a quiet technical update.

While Cerakote-finished Bugouts got a star turn last spring and Benchmade’s custom program made a MagnaCut-bladed Bugout possible last fall, it’s still awesome to see them come together here.

After all, the result is a blend of toughness, corrosion resistance, edge retention and ease of sharpening for which there is no equal.

Rounding out the package are some well-considered touches that ensure classic Benchmade performance and tie this release to 2026.

Among those are the patented Axis crossbar lock you’ll find on virtually every Benchmade folder, a sturdy, reliable mechanism that ensures swift and smooth deployment and retraction of the blade.

The Taiga Green thumb stud and back spacer tie the knife to early 2026 Benchmade releases, while the reversible pocket clip ensures the Vapyr is safely by your side until you need it.

Of course, primary deployment comes via the ambidextrous thumb stud, rendered in Taiga Green to match both the backspacer and the new Bugout, Mini Bugout and Shootout that kicked off the year.

Last but not least is a reversible tip-down clip, because when you have a knife this superlative, you want to keep it secure in your pocket whenever it’s not tackling everyday tasks more satisfyingly than any that have come before.
