Unearthing buried treasure must be pretty sweet, but what might be even sweeter is stumbling into a gold strike.

That’s what happened to me the other day while researching the news of Benchmade adding highly exclusive Dama Monarch steel to the custom program for the Bugout.

I searched “Bugout” on Benchmade’s site just to see how many different varieties there were, and way down at the bottom of the page sat this odd little thumbnail.

Image not available, text shows product name "BUGOUT®" with price $850 and note "COMING SOON" with code 535BK-251.
I might have cruised past this empty box, but you can’t see “Bugout/$850” and not click.

Say whaat? I clicked on the link and landed on quite a stunner — one that essentially dishes the dirt behind a teaser Instagram post a colleague later shared.

Behold the limited-edition 535BK-251 Gold Class Bugout — and learn everything about it before beginning a treasure hunt of your own to actually claim the thing.

Prospector’s delight

“In 1864, while on a hurried trek to a gold-rich region of northern Montana, four prospectors spotted signs of gold in the Helena area.”

Even folded, this Gold Class Bugout puts plenty of treasure on display.

“After striking out up north, they returned to Helena for one last chance to make their fortune, discovering a rich deposit of placer gold, staking their claim to what they would name Last Chance Gulch.”

The blade adheres to the Bugout’s classic size and shape: 3.24-inch drop-point.

Per Benchmade, that’s basically the origin story of Helena, which went on to become the capital of the state of Montana in 1889.

As you’ll soon come to appreciate, the offside has much more going on than the presentation side.

It’s also the inspiration for the new Bugout, which carries an aesthetic that pretty clearly evokes the emotion of spotting sweet, sweet gold amidst dirt and rocks.

Decadent details

As you might expect from the price tag, this thing boasts a host of spectacular specs. First off, there’s a titanium frame featuring an integrated bolster with a faux-hammered finish and a Fatcarbon Stellar onlay infused with gold flakes.

What, your Bugout isn’t infused with gold flakes? How gauche!

The blade itself is classic Bugout — a 3.24-inch drop-point — but here it is made of M390 super steel and skinned in dual-tone Cerakote with an actual map of Last Chance Gulch engraved on the back.

Complementing those luxe features are a bevy of gold-plated hardware bits, including the thumb studs, backspacer and the bar of the Axis lock.

Even the clip is something special. It’s black oxide custom-machined with a dynamite detonator cutout.

A custom-machined cutout on the clip is one last detail not to be missed.

To echo what those early prospectors must have exclaimed: Eureka!
