When is one knife blade not enough? That’s a pretty tough question to answer.

For more pedestrian EDC use, a single blade usually gets the job done. But when you venture out into the backcountry, cutting tasks get a bit tougher and may require multiple specialized blades to be done right.

To most, that might mean bringing along more than one knife on your adventures. But what if you didn’t have to? That’s the answer the Böker Plus HL Triple seeks to answer, all while remaining affordable and approachable.

Triple trouble

As is pretty obvious at this point, the HL Triple, as its name suggests, features three distinct blades. And each serves its own distinct purpose.

The first is a classic drop-point blade. Made from 440C stainless steel (as are the other two), this is an outstanding all-purpose blade, like the one to see the most use. It has a nail nick for easy deployment and a back lock for added security in use.

The other two blades, however, are slipjoints — meaning they’re non-locking. They still have pressure exerted on them to keep them open when in use, but you’ll want to be a little more cautious.

The first is a saw, which is great for cutting through wood or bone (if you’re a hunter). The second is a hooked blade that’s also useful for dressing purposes, as well as detail work (like whittling).

Both of those secondary blades also have reinforced tips to aid in prying tasks, reducing the likelihood of breaking when pressure is applied to the tip.

Three dog knife

Opposite the blade, you’ll find a hi-vis handle, done in bright orange. As it has to house all three blades, it’s pretty wide.

Thankfully, it is ergonomically shaped, as well, making it easy to wrap your fingers around it in a secure grip — and crucial for difficult outdoor use.

It also has a pair of durable and tough fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle scales. While helping keep the cost down, these scales are also perfect for remaining grippy in soggy conditions, as is common outdoors. They’re also resistant to temperature changes, chemicals and more.

Altogether, the knife measures 7.6 inches with the blades all measuring 3.3 inches. It’s a little heavy at 6.0 ounces, but that’s actually pretty light considering its triple blades.

And there’s one last catch: it doesn’t have a pocket clip. Instead, it comes with a nylon belt pouch to make hauling it easier.
