Though he is best known for perfecting the modern liner lock in his early 30s, Michael Walker has cooked up more than 20 mechanisms over a career spanning more than four decades.

One of the New Mexico-based designer’s less-famous innovations emerged from a strange obsession: replacing the thumb stud on his liner-locked blade with a button lock

Improving with every iteration, the latest Walker Blade Lock reminds us that the third time really is a charm.

After several attempts, the Blade Magazine HOFer developed the Walker Blade Lock, which became something of a collector’s obsession.

Now it is their lucky day and ours too, as CRKT drops arguably the best-looking execution of the beguiling little mechanism yet.

Brilliant disguise

What’s most fun about the mechanism here is the fact that at a glance, it looks pretty much like your typical thumb stud-deployed blade.

The knife seamlessly fuses modern design and heritage style, with a dash of steampunk for good measure.

In reality, however, that thumb stud rests on a tensioned tab that holds the blade in either the closed or open position.

To deploy the blade, you must press down to release it and simultaneously push out, as you would with a typical thumb stud; to bring it home, you simply reverse the motion.

For all its conversation-starting qualities, the 2.93-inch sheepsfoot blade can also tackle many an everyday task.

While you can’t really “flick” it, the system offers very smooth and satisfying one-handed functionality.

While this knife has previously appeared in two other forms, with a satin-finished blade and with a natural G10 handle, the new treatment stands out from the pack.

The 2.93-inch sheepsfoot blade is made of one of the better budget knife steels, 14C28N, valued for its impressive edge retention, with a Titanium Nitride finish imbuing a darkly dazzling aesthetic.

The matching black stainless steel handle features brown textured G10 overlays, which give off woodsy heritage vibes while also boosting grip.

Rounding out the package is a matching black tip-up clip, adding pocketability to a knife that’s perfectly at home on your desk, living out its days as an heirloom-worthy gentleman’s folder.
