A Beloved, Defunct EDC Brand’s Best Knife Returns in All Its Former Glory (and Then Some)

“All killer, no filler” might be the best phrase to describe Flytanium’s revived Arcform minimalist masterpiece blade.

I’ve waxed poetic time and time again about how we’re currently in a knifemaking and everyday carry renaissance. However, while we fans are spoiled for choice, the industry is still often quite brutal for the makers and designers, which hasn’t been helped by things like tariffs, company buyouts and brand shutterings.

Take Arcform, for instance. A sub-brand of Flytanium, this enthusiast-focused brand went belly up just last year, despite its wealth of super-solid EDC knives.

But all is not lost, thankfully. One of the brand’s best offerings has just been revived by its parent brand in the Flytanium Theory. And there’s an argument to be made that it is even better now.

Unified theory

What was always interesting about the original Theory is that it was Arcform’s first in-house design. All its other designs had been licensed from their respective creators. That makes the Theory a true original.

Technically, since Arcform fell under the Flytanium umbrella, this new version retains that originality. This isn’t someone else’s design, and that makes it special for Flytanium.

That said, this isn’t a simple copy-paste job. While it retains the same overall silhouette, some of the details have been carefully rethought in this new edition.

Most notably, the deployment has been reimagined. On the Arcform versions, the knife was either offered with thumb studs or an oval-shaped thumb hole. This version gets a thumb hole, but it has been redesigned, making it larger, better looking, sleeker and more in line with the knife’s silhouette.

However, some other details thankfully return…

Happily ever after

The Theory looks pretty sleek, thanks to its minimalist styling. That said, it’s still quite beefy, measuring 8.12 inches overall with a 3.5-inch blade.

Speaking of, the drop point blade is crafted from exceptional 20CV steel, a sister material to M390, which offers outstanding edge retention, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

Can we get a little appreciation for how the pocket clip blends with the butt of the handle?

That blade is mated to a stunning grade-5 titanium handle with an integrated frame lock mechanism — one of the most tried-and-true locks on the market. It also has a matching pocket clip, whose shape matches the unique angular butt of the handle — an outstanding stylistic detail.

The knife is also available in just two colors, black and silver, and favors minimalism over superfluous flair. In the words of the brand, the Theory is “a blank canvas – simple lines, flat handles, clean machining, and curves that feel just right. Everything you want, nothing extra.”

And you know what? I think they’re right on the money.

Available now

The Flytanium Theory is now available in silver or black colorways on the brand’s site for $199 apiece, which is actually a lower price point than its Arcform predecessor.
