The King of Off-Grid Hot Showers Finally Made a System for Casual Car Campers

Portable hot shower systems used to thrive only in custom overland rigs. The Joolca HOTTAP Go changes that calculus for even casual campers willing to pay for the convenience.

A hot shower after a dusty, sweaty day camping has long been a luxury mostly reserved for hardcore overlanders who invested in custom rigs complete with dual-battery setups and enough 12-volt gear to wire a small apartment.

The Australian-based brand Joolca built its reputation with this crowd when it launched theย original HOTTAP back in 2012, which earned consistent praise among off-the-grid adventurers for delivering genuine on-demand hot water in the backcountry, though the revolutionary accessory didn’t launch in the U.S. until 2019. Its newest product, however, aims at a broader target: the car camper who just wants a clean rinse without engineering a custom rig to get it.

The original Joolca HOTTAP and its updated successor, HOTTAP V2, have long been praised by the overlanding community as excellent solutions for enjoying on-demand hot water virtually anywhere. But while it’s incredibly compact compared to residential counterparts, its remaining bulk and setup requirements make it less ideal for more casual campers hoping to spend a day or two off the grid.

The Joolca HOTTAP Go – which was originally called the HOTTIE when the first production models were available in January – distills that overlanding pedigree into a more compact, self-contained unit that skips the need to source a separate water tank. Fill it before you leave camp, hook up a propane canister and a power bank, and you have pressurized hot water ready to go. That sounds simple because it mostly is โ€” which is exactly what makes it interesting.

The nearly all-in-one solution

The Joocla GO was originally introduced earlier this year as the Joocla HOTTIE. It’s designed as a smaller, all-in-one solution that is much easier to use and transport, making it an appealing luxury for car campers who can afford it.

The outdoor shower market has grown surprisingly crowded, and the options now span a wide spectrum. At the bottom sit gravity-fed or foot-pump bags โ€” cheap, light, but dependent entirely on the sun to warm the water. A tier up are powered sprayers like the RinseKit Pro, which deliver real pressure but no heat. Then come the propane-fired units that actually heat water on demand, the category where the HOTTAP Go lives.

Within that heated tier, the HOTTAP Go carves out a specific niche. Size-wise, it weighs just under 22 pounds before adding water, and takes up about the same amount of physical space as a 5-gallon Jerry Can (19.5 x 14.1 x 7.1 in). Joocla says those dimensions mean the Go can easily be stored in any mount designed to hold Jerry Cans.

The HOTTAP Go’s biggest advantage over competing portable hot shower systems is its integrated water tank, which holds roughly 3.4 gallons.

Speaking of water, its integrated tank, which holds roughly 3.4 gallons, eliminates the need to attach a separate water source or reservoir to start showering. With a stated flow rate of between 0.4 – 0.9 gal/min, that means it holds enough for roughly two very conservative showers before needing a refill.

That single design decision simplifies the Go’s setup in at least one way compared to other heated water systems in the market.

Fill the tank at a spigot or water source, attach the included 9.8 ft shower hose and a standard 1-pound propane canister, connect it to a USB-C battery or to a 12V DC car adaptor to power the pump and ignition, and you’re done.

Long-term users of the original HOTTAP consistently praised its reliability; the Go inherits that core heating mechanism in a more approachable form factor, while still offering a max heating temp of 140ยฐF and stated pre-heating time of ~5 min.

Using the Go is fairly straight forward once an external battery or car power source and a propane tank are attached. It powers on with the push of a button and allows users to adjust the ideal water temperatues via an integrated display.

The tradeoffs are real and worth naming. That integrated tank is convenient until it runs dry, which can happen mid-rinse if you’re not conservative โ€” refills between uses are likely. You’re also trading one set of supplies for another: no need to haul a separate water container, but you do need both propane and a charged power bank. That’s a different dependency, not necessarily a lighter one. At $554, the HOTTAP Go is undeniably a luxury item, though it’s fairly priced for the category.

The Go also faces more competition today, each of which offer a different set of tradeoffs that may appeal more or less to certain kinds of campers.

The Kakadu Outback Shower flips the formula โ€” it includes an integrated battery so you don’t need an external power bank, but it requires you to bring your own water container. The BougeRV Portable Propane Outdoor Water Heater makes a similar tradeoff at a lower price point, though it lacks the brand track record.

At the far end of the spectrum, the Geyser System is impressively small and efficient, but it’s more of a heated sponge bath than a true outdoor shower.

Availability and what it costs

Users have the optin of buying a sink accessory, which allows the Go to provide hot water for dish duty too.

The HOTTAP Go retails for $554 directly from Joolca’s website. Joolca also sells bundle kits at higher price points that add accessories like a carrying case and battery, and even a portable sink โ€” a worthwhile upgrade if you want the Go to pull double duty as a camp dishwashing station.

If a genuine hot shower after a hard day outside sounds like a reasonable ask โ€” not an overland fantasy โ€” the HOTTAP Go is now one of the most frictionless ways to get there on the market.

The tank size demands some water discipline, and the power-plus-propane dependency means one more thing to pack. But for car campers who have been waiting for a heated shower solution that doesn’t require a dedicated truck build, this is a compelling answer.
