Kansept’s Gorgeous New Gentleman’s Knife Quietly Integrates a Coveted EDC Feature

By day, it masquerades as one magnificent yet mild-mannered folder, but when the sun sets, it’s time to shine.

It’s a question modern EDC knife brands must ask themselves all the time: How do we make this one stand out from the pack?

The answer comes in many forms, from blade shape and steel to handle material, deployment options, locking mechanics and more.

With its reverse tanto blade and Fatcarbon handle, the Halide is striking enough from the jump.

Yet this year, we’ve been seeing a fun and functional new element surface more and more: glow-in-the-dark scales.

Taking things a step further is Kansept’s latest gentleman’s knife, the Halide, which carries this feature so far under the radar that it’s doubly exciting to see it come to life.

When the lights go out

Let’s cut to the chase: for all the great qualities of this streamlined beauty (which I will I get into later), the real, ahem, highlight is its unique handle scales, complements of the Lithuanian wizards at Fatcarbon.

In normal lighting conditions, they give off one of the brand’s trademark swirly finishes, imparting an air of marble-adjacent luxury befitting a high-end knife.

Then the lights go out, it loosens its tie and is ready for a rave, an unexpected dimension for a gent’s folder.

However, this Fatcarbon treatment is no ordinary Dark Matter; it is Dark Matter Glow, which means that when shadows fall, those swirls light up in an enchanting fashion.

Of course, there is a dimension of functional practicality here too, because an illuminated handle invariably makes a knife much easier to keep track of than something so mundane as a typical G10 or micarta.

In this case, the feature is a huge bonus rather than the whole story, as the rest of the Halide (designed by 19-year-old knifemaking prodigy James Arnold) is pretty spectacular already.

The S35VN reverse tanto blade offers not only good looks but also plenty of everyday cutting and slicing functionality.

The business end is a stonewashed 3.2-inch reverse tanto blade made of S35VN, a super steel prized for its potential hardness, toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance.

Deployed via a front or rear flipper, the blade swings swiftly and smoothly on the d-shaped pivot pin and stays firmly in place via a sturdy liner lock.

The reinforced spine, aka “extended tang,” brings the steel’s overall strength closer to that of a fixed blade.

Reliable performance is further bolstered by a structured stepped spine, complete with a bit of discreet jimping to stabilize your thumb during precise or high-pressure tasks.

In addition to its luminescence, the handle is also 3D-machined for an immaculate yet ergonomic aesthetic, complemented by a 3D-milled titanium clip that makes pocket carry easy.

Leaving no detail to chance, the Halide rounds things out with a 3D-milled titanium clip.

While the knife also comes in a number of non-glowing variants starting at $160, this treatment may be the most fitting, as halide is an actual word referring to “a binary compound of a halogen with a more electropositive element or radical.”

What could be more radical than a knife that secretly glows in the dark?
