There is no shortage of novel, EDC-focused bags on the market. When it comes to capable, technical packs, our collective cup runneth over.

But, while there is an abundance of packs, totes and duffels to choose from, few can match the origin story of this new, ultra-limited-edition backpack from two of the most respected names in everyday carry.

Unusual origins

The Redeye 24 Backpack was developed by Matador as part of the third episode of Carryology’s Maker’s Mystery Box, a video series that challenges brands to develop a unique prototype bag from scratch in just 24 hours, using mystery materials.

But after Matador’s design knocked it out of the park, both brands liked the design so much they decided to turn it into a first-of-its-kind, limited-edition release … which is going on sale this week.

The Redeye 24 is based directly off the initial prototype designed by Matador’s lead soft goods designer, Sam Goodhue, which was a 24-liter backpack constructed to offer three carry modes: backpack, sling or duffel.

Matador and Carryology refined the features, made a few notable upgrades and asked the Carryology community for feedback and insights. After months of refinement, the result is one of the most intriguing packs of the year.

Built to last

The Redeye 24 Red edition is built using a PFAS-free, VX21 Dimension-Polyant 4-layer laminated composite, while the Black edition is constructed using PFAS-free 420D nylon oxford with a PU coating and washed finish.

Designed with everyday carry in mind, the three-way, just over two-pound pack’s feature set includes a magnetic laptop sleeve, clamshell access with limiter panels, a divided main compartment to maintain organization on the go, an oversized top pocket to easily stow essentials and an admin panel with layered organization infrastructure.
