Materials matter. That’s one takeaway from the latest batch of new knives and EDC products, where prices range from a $30 Böker blade to a $352 We Knife offering.
The biggest reasons for the price disparity? The former features a wooden handle and a 420 steel blade, whereas the latter gets titanium and Böhler M390 super steel.
What unites them, however, are attractive looks and performance that’s up to the task at hand. Those are key elements we look for in every knife, multi-tool and EDC item we cover.
Check out the past week’s spectrum below, and remember that you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune to score a winner.

GiantMouse ACE Farley V1 – Titanium
Named for a beloved bar and bistro in Sausalito, California, the Farley is welcome just about anywhere thanks to its 2.75-inch blade and non-locking slipjoint mechanism. Sleek Scandinavian design and high-end materials including Elmax and titanium, meanwhile, ensure the pocket-friendly folder looks great and carries light (2.2 ounces) too.
The pocket notebook is an EDC essential that predates the whole concept of everyday carry by centuries. However, it has rarely been improved, especially like this. Instead of a traditional binding, this hardcover notebook opens like an accordion, offering more surface area with less bulk. It also has a handy expanding cardholder slot good for up to 20 cards and a strap that can be used to attach a pen or stash some cash — essentially, it’s a notebook and a cardholder wallet in one.
Designed by Jason Knight of Knight Forge Studio, this We Knife combines elements of America’s original fighting knife, the Bowie, with highly contemporary, premium materials. For instance, it has an aggressive clip point blade with a fuller-inspired nail nick for manual deployment, but it also has a flipper, and it’s made from Böhler M390 super steel. It also features an ergonomic frame lock handle with titanium scales. It’s the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
This EDC hybrid boasts the most creative take on tool integration in years. What looks like a little lanyard slot on the butt of the handle is in fact a rotating (and lockable) hexagonal multi-tool offering a number of handy functions, including a pry bar, bottle opener, bit driver, box and can opener and mini hammer. The other end is no slouch either, boasting 3.1-inch, partially serrated drop-point is made of robust yet budget-friendly D2 steel.
Some decades ago, the concept of a pocket knife was far simpler than it is today. For many of us, our first folding knife was a simple, affordable, reliable slipjoint. That’s exactly what Böker has replicated with its Rusticus. Built out of red beech wood and 420 steel, it’s rustic and nostalgic, yet still rugged and reliable enough to get EDC cutting tasks done right. And that’s pretty exceptional, considering how remarkably affordable it is.
One of renowned custom knifemaker Lucas Burnley’s most popular designs gets super-affordable thanks to this new treatment, which leverages budget-friendly but still reliable materials and retains the streamlined good looks. That means a handle made of grippy Micarta, plus ambidextrous thumb studs, a crossbar lock and a 3.23-inch drop-point blade made of black stonewashed D2 steel, valued for its excellent wear resistance and edge retention.
The kings of titanium EDC aim to clean up your key rings — and pretty much anything else dependent on a strap or attached to a pack — with these clever crowd-funded connectors. Highlights include a modular mounting system that can adapt to different tools and accessories, a reliable dual-locking system powered by N56 magnets and, as always, GR5 Titanium, the super lightweight and strong material that Titaner relies on for all its smart and sturdy products.
