Japanese swordsmiths โ€” the artificers responsible for crafting samurai swords โ€” are about as legendary as blacksmiths come. And while the warrior class has faded into history, their techniques persist in the modern day through the country’s rich tradition of knife-making.

Among the latest chapters in that story is the Shirasagi Tesho Knives โ€” a pair of stunning and rugged fixed blades built utilizing centuries of swordmaking techniques by a multi-decade veteran of Japan’s Self Defense Force.

Elegance and effectiveness

The Tesho Knife is borne of its creator’s personal experience serving as a motorcycle scout. In his position, he was required to perform reconnaissance and survival training with minimal gear. Very quickly, he learned the importance of a solid knife.

That led him, after decades of service and a whopping 30 years of knifemaking experience, to craft the Tesho. This knife is lightweight and extremely minimalist, lending credence to its use in bushcraft and survival situations, and yet it offers strength and capabilities that far exceed its simplicity.

The Tesho is available in two sizes, allowing you to select the one that best suits your needs. The Large measures 7.87 inches and has a 3.94-inch blade, and the Small measures 5.12 inches with a 2.36-inch blade.

They’re both crafted from a single, unbroken piece of carbon steel โ€” meaning they’re full-tang knives โ€” which makes them lightweight yet incredibly tough. And since they’re fixed blades, they come with leather sheaths for easier hauling.

Centuries-old craftsmanship

What truly sets these knives apart is the techniques used to craft them. The craftsmanship combines old and new methods into a functional, unified whole.

For instance, the pre-sized piece of steel are initially cut with power tools, before being forged with hammer and anvil and quenched, over and over again. Then, the blades are shaped on a modern grinder.

The next step is to add the unique Hamon pattern โ€” the wavy lines on the blade that give them an appearance similar to samurai swords. Per Shirasagi, the Hamon of each knife is “created using the same traditional heat-treatment technique [as samurai swords], resulting in a knife with a truly original character.”

Then, the blades are tempered, polished and sharpened. Note that the handles appear to be left unfinished; this is purposeful. The style of the handle is intentionally left rugged for two reasons: it adds character and provides a better grip.
