Interchangeable lenses may seem commonplace now, but thirty years ago, the tech was almost non-existent. In 1995, performance eyewear leader Smith released the first-ever patented dual lens interchangeable sunglasses and permanently changed the game for adaptive eyewear.

Now, the brand is bringing back its beloved sunglasses from the past, re-releasing the Sliders as a new sunglass style that pays homage to the collection’s ’90s roots, while injecting it with plenty of modern capability.

Easy on the eyes

When the original Sliders hit the market in 1995, they were the first patented pair of sunglasses with dual, interchangeable lenses. While eyewear technology has come a long way in the last 30 years, the original DNA of the Sliders had a lot going for it.

The new Sliders maintain the same design of the original, including the 8-base wraparound frame and three sets of lenses for changing looks and adapting to shifting light conditions. Auto-lock hinges hold the frames open for easy one-handed swaps, so you don’t have to miss a beat.

New features include no-slip megol nose pads and temple tips, which keep things in place during activity, and notable material advancements.

These include Smith’s proprietary Evolve bio-based frame material and ChromaPop lens technology, which brings the Sliders from past to present by cutting glare while enhancing definition, color and clarity.

The included lenses also come with smudge- and moisture-resistant coatings for easy cleaning and clearer optics.

The Sliders, available in four colorways, come pre-installed with sun-tint lenses, plus two additional sets, one in “ChromaPop Low Light Copper” and “Clear.”
