SOG Upgrades and Improves the World’s Slimmest Assisted-Deployment EDC Knife

The aptly named SlimJim is remarkably slender, yet it still springs open lightning-fast. Now, it’s better than ever before.

Ultra-thin EDC knives can be quite the achievement. For instance, Vosteed’s Parallel took the everyday carry world by storm, impressing with its 7.1-millimeter width. Before that, there was The James Brand’s Ellis Slim.

While the Parallel is one of the world’s thinnest locking knives and the Ellis is impressive in its own right, another brand holds a different svelteness-related record.

SOG’s SlimJim (now in its second edition) is the world’s thinnest EDC knife with an assisted opening mechanism — and the brand just revamped it to make it better than ever.

Two SOG Slim Jim 2.0 folding knives are shown side by side with blades open. The top knife has a dark, stonewashed blade and handle, while the bottom knife has a polished silver blade and handle. Both knives feature a clip on the handle's end and textured grooves along the handle for grip. The SOG logo and "SLIM JIM 2.0" are printed near the base of each blade.

Razor thin

If you thought the Parallel was thin at 7.1 millimeters wide, you might want to sit down. The SlimJim 2.0 is even thinner, measuring 0.18 inches — that’s only 4.572 millimeters.

While other brands have boasted that their knives are thinner than a pack of gum, this one trumps them all by being nearly half as thick as a pack of stick gum.

Two folding knives are displayed on a wooden surface. The knife on the left is shown from the side, highlighting its thin profile and clip. The knife on the right is open, revealing a stainless steel blade with the brand "SOG" and model details etched near the base. The handle of the right knife is light gray with a textured grip and a locking mechanism. The wood surface beneath has a rustic, worn appearance with visible grain and scratches.

But thinness itself is not this knife’s only achievement. As mentioned, it has an assisted-opening deployment. That means, inside its ridiculously slender body, it’s spring-loaded, helping kick the blade out when the user opens it.

While that was true for the original SlimJim, too, the 2.0 edition has an improved mechanism, making it faster and more reliable than before. That means deployment is quicker, more convenient and can always be counted on, even in a pinch.

Slender yet strong

Beyond the knife’s thinness and improved mechanism, SOG has also altered and improved other elements. For instance, the handle has been given a once-over, making it more modern, ergonomic and intuitive.

It retains its locking mechanism, as well — yes, despite its slenderness, it still has a lock. The back lock is just as strong and reliable as ever.

Inside its ridiculously slender body, it’s spring-loaded, helping kick the blade out when the user opens it.

The handle, including the internal mechanisms, is also all made from stainless steel, offering plenty of durability, toughness and resistance to the elements.

Opposite the handle, the blade measures 3.18 inches and is built from AUS-8 steel, an affordable yet reliable and easy-to-care-for option that helps keep the cost affordable and the knife approachable for all levels and budgets.

Lastly, it has a low-profile, deep-carry, reversible pocket clip, making slipping this knife into your pocket a simple, convenient prospect.

Perhaps the most baffling aspect of this EDC knife is its affordability. The SOG SlimJim 2.0 is just $70. It’s now available in silver and black colorways on the brand’s site.

SOG SlimJim 2.0

SOG’s SlimJim was already the thinnest assisted-deployment EDC knife around. But now the brand has improved it in some crucial ways. For starters, the brand improved the internal mechanism to make it stronger and faster. It also improved the ergonomics to make them more comfortable and intuitive. And yet, it’s still remarkably affordable, too.
