Water and salt are two of knives’ biggest enemies. Together, they can cause corrosion, which will eat away at even the toughest of steels … okay, maybe not all of them.

Some, thankfully, are exceptionally resistant to corrosion, making them especially suitable for waterborne activities, such as diving and fishing. That’s precisely the thought behind Spyderco’s Salt lineup, which features some of the most corrosion-resistant materials applied to the brand’s most exceptional knives.

The latest knife to join that lineup is the Spyderco Shaman Salt, which takes an already outstanding EDC folder and gives it some serious upgrades.

Feel like a new (Sha)man

The Shaman is actually based on another fan-favorite knife from Spyderco’s catalog, the Native. In fact, their silhouettes are downright identical. So, what’s the difference? Size.

Depending on the configuration, the Native typically falls below 7.0 inches and has a 3.0-inch blade (give or take.) But the Shaman is a good deal beefier. This one measures 8.25 inches total with a 3.58-inch blade.

Not only does that size difference make the Shaman more intimidating, but it also makes it more capable and easier to use with bigger (or gloved) hands. However, it is still highly ergonomic and stylistically sleek.

Perhaps most importantly, the Shaman (the Salt version included) features the brand’s unparalleled Compression Lock for extreme strength and security, as well as that signature oversized Round Hole for simple ambidextrous manual deployment.

Sea-faring slicer

The standard version of the Spyderco Shaman comes with an S30V blade and a G-10 handle. However, that combination does not make for the kind of corrosion resistance found in the brand’s Salt knives.

As such, there’s a pretty significant change to the blade steel, swapping the S30V for MagnaCut. Along with being a highly touted all-around super steel, MagnaCut is exceptionally resistant to water and salt, making it adept in environments with high moisture content, including those found in the ocean.

This take on the Shaman also sees a black DLC finish applied to that MagnaCut blade, offering even more durability and a boost to styling. The four-position pocket clip and hardware are also swapped for ultra-corrosion-resistant materials with low-profile black coatings.

The G-10 handle remains, as it is already waterproof and not susceptible to salt corrosion, since it isn’t made from metal. However, it does get a new machining pattern, Spyderco’s signature Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture, which is grippier than typical scales and easier to grab in wet conditions or with gloves on.
