The North Face’s Esteemed Japanese Offshoot Drops an Understated Military-Inspired Capsule

TNF’s Purple Label teams up with London-based streetwear brand Palace Skateboards on a minimalist collection.

The North Face is one of the world’s largest outdoor gear and apparel brands. One of its most lauded offshoots is the Purple Label, a Japanese sub-brand that focuses on the intersection of the outdoors and streetwear.

Now, that sub-brand has teamed up with another major streetwear player from the other side of the world to launch The North Face Purple Label x Palace Skateboards Capsule Collection.

Understated, not underrated

The collection is pretty massive, spanning at least 11 different items. However, they all do have some common threads.

The most obvious is that they’re all affixed with TNF Purple Label and Palace Skateboards co-branding. Most feature small patches — one for each brand — but there are also graphic tees that have much larger versions of those logos printed on their front and back.

However, another common thread is their minimalist styling and military-inspired colorways. The majority of the collection is offered in two distinct colors, a light gray (“Asphalt Gray”) and an olive drab (“Sage Green”), including the jackets, field hats, mittens and both bags.

And all of them, regardless of the larger colorway, feature TNF Purple Label’s signature purple color in some form or another (usually the patches, but also on the print on shirts and hoodies).

Head-to-toe

Obviously, I’ve touched on it a little, but it bears repeating: this collection is pretty beefy. Not only is it comprised of 11 individual styles ranging from jackets to mittens to bags, but the options are practically doubled when you consider that each style is available in at least two colorways (and some in three).

And it’s not just colors; it’s also materials. The outdoor jackets (there’s a puffer and a parka, both with detachable hoods), pants and bags are primarily made from nylon — another military nod — while the tees and hoodies are cotton, and there are even some knit fabrics in the mix, as in the Windstopper jacket.

Furthermore, some of the items have Gore-Tex waterproof coatings (namely the jackets), which makes them even more all-weather friendly. If only the collection included socks and/or shoes, you’d be able to truly wrap yourself head-to-toe in TNF Purple Label x Palace Skateboards gear.

All the same, this collection is likely going to be a major hit among TNF, Palace and streetwear fans. That said, it’s going to be difficult to get, as there’s one major downside: it’s a Japan-exclusive release.

Pricing and availability

The North Face Purple Label x Palace Skateboards Capsule Collection will launch on December 19. However (as mentioned), it will be available exclusively in Japan and will likely sell out very quickly.
