The Kings of Titanium EDC Light up Kickstarter (Again) with a Rugged Yet Refined Rolling Carry-On

The brand’s penchant for bold over-engineering comes up big for a product category desperately in need of it.

Covering launches from the mad scientists at Titaner the past couple of years, I’ve often likened the Hong Kong-based company to another GP favorite, San Francisco’s Peak Design.

The chief parallel between the two brands is their habit of only entering product categories when their R&D indicates they can bring something truly new and different and better to the marketplace.

Like almost every product from Titaner, the Voyager wears its titanium bona fides on its sleeve, er, shell.

All this time, however, the actual product categories generally differed, with Peak Design focused on camera gear, bags and mobile products and Titaner hitting EDC from every conceivable angle.

Now, however, the streams have finally crossed, as Titaner enters a category that Peak Design absolutely nuked Kickstarter with last spring: rolling luggage.

Singular sensations

True to form, the Titaner Voyager Waterproof Titanium Carry-On System is totally different from the Roller Pro.

While the latter leans on Peak Design’s background in intuitive user-friendly bags, the former’s foundation is the brand’s eponymous go-to material: titanium.

Another trademark is of course an exhaustive Kickstarter page ($154K raised and counting) breaking down the details and reminding you they’ve thought of just about everything.

That said, a few major highlights deserve particular attention, as they help the Voyager stand out from the pack.

Even without the optional Internal Waterproof Gear Vault, the Voyager can stand up to Mother Nature’s worst.

The shell is indeed made of Grade-1 titanium, which is both harder to machine than other metals and uniquely light and strong, enabling this unit to stand up to a lifetime of abuse from car trunks, city streets, conveyor belts, staircases, overhead bins and more.

The Voyager also eschews traditional zippers, which are prone to water seepage, degradation and forced entry, in favor of TSA-approved locking latches that seal things up tight yet are user-friendly enough to be opened with an elbow in a pinch.

More proof of the brand’s precise engineering: some of the smoothest-spinning wheels we’ve ever seen.

Perhaps that helps compensate for the unit’s biggest weakness: no external pockets for quick access to travel essentials.

Meanwhile, Titaner has put some of its deepest engineering into one of the highest-touch areas, resulting in a 13-level adjustable handle that can adapt to any transit scenario smoothly.

This feature, along with many others, is subject to exhaustive torture testing, ensuring it can take a licking and keep on clicking.

Though softer than the tough exterior, the internal organization elements are equally purpose-built.

Meanwhile, the opposite end of the Voyager boasts a quartet of silent-running 360-degree spinner wheels, which roll smoothly in any direction and can be easily replaced for either aesthetic or life-extending reasons.

The Voyager also offers a classy, immaculately organized interior, featuring a full 180-degree flat opening, elastic straps with full-panel dividers and pockets on both sides for stashing small essentials.

Titaner takes care to note that this GIF (and the Vovager itself) is “for performance demo only; not for rescue use.”

Among many optional add-ons, one jumps out: the Internal Waterproof Gear Vault ($60), a leakproof “box inside the box” with a triple-sided airtight zipper that will protect equipment such as cameras, tech products and other sensitive equipment not only from a downpour but straight-up full immersion.

I sure hope it doesn’t come to that, but you can rest easy knowing your gear, at least, will stay dry as a bone and sound as a pound.

Availability and pricing

The Titaner Voyager Waterproof Titanium Carry-On System is available now on Kickstarter at the Launch Day Special price of $579, $500 less than the eventual MSRP. Estimated delivery is December.

Don’t snooze if you are interested, as the number of units available at that price is shrinking fast.
