Sometimes, a great idea needs a second chance to really shine. For instance, Amazon started as an early internet bookseller before blossoming into the online retail giant we know today. Similarly, Crocs had to emerge from commercial kitchens before becoming a fashion staple.

While We Knife’s Micro Trogon isn’t quite a reimagining of that same magnitude, the point remains: this knife has become better than ever with just a few tweaks.

From whence it came

As you’ve likely surmised, the We Knife Micro Trogon isn’t a wholly novel design. It’s based on a full-sized knife called, obviously, the Trogon. Designed by Brian Brown, it was one of We Knife’s more popular designs when it dropped.

Still, it had its downsides. Its biggest was, well, its size. At 7.77 inches, it was a little too big for some people to carry reasonably. Still, its silhouette and construction were rock solid, making up for its bulkiness and heft.

Thankfully, the Micro Trogon retains virtually everything there was to love about its predecessor, while shaving off a full 1.25 inches of its length. The silhouette remains, as does its excellent construction and most of its materials.

For anyone who appreciated the original Trogon’s looks and makeup but just couldn’t get past its size, this redux rights that wrong. Of course, it’s not completely unaltered, besides.

Tastes great, less filling (sort of)

My first inclination was to compare the Micro Trogon to a light beer, but that doesn’t do it justice. If it were just smaller, that kind of rhetoric might fly, but this isn’t just a watered-down version of an existing knife.

For starters, its trio of colorways is entirely new and doesn’t overlap with the existing Trogon configurations. Furthermore, while it retains some of its features — like the titanium handle scales, frame lock, thumb stud deployment and blade fuller — it does see one major change to its blade.

The original Trogons were crafted with 20CV steel blades. Along with shortening them to 2.68 inches (from 3.2 inches), the steel has also been swapped for Böhler M390. (While that’s technically a change, these steels are remarkably similar and, for the most part, will perform identically.)

Whatever the case, it’s nice to see that We Knife didn’t just shrink the silhouette and call it a day. The differences, even if they’re small, make this knife feel a lot fresher than it could have. Plus, it provides more impetus for both new buyers and returning fans alike.
