A Unique Heirloom Knife Returns with a Multifaceted Makeover That Won’t Stick Around Long

The WESN x P&Co collaboration is back with new treatments that are just as whimsical and rare as those in the original collection.

Nearly two years ago, Detroit-based WESN collaborated with Birmingham, England-based P&Co. on a slip-jointed and therefore UK-legal Microblade that sold out in a weekend.

The two brands reunited this past summer to create the Scrimshaw Collection, which honored the craftsmanship of 18th- and 19th-century sailors who carved intricate designs into knife handles made of whalebone and ivory.

Three folding knives with brass bolsters and white handles featuring engraved designs of a cowboy on horseback, a leaping leopard, and a sailing ship.
The three new Scrimshaw designs are fittingly named: The Rancher, The Wildcat and The Vessel.

That series — featuring unique carvings on one handle scale of the beloved Henry, plus a kit with India ink, a carving tool and instructions detailing how to add your own personal style to the other scale —  also sold out in a weekend.

If you rue missing it, I have good news. WESN will be releasing the Scrimshaw Henry Collection 2.0 this Friday, with three new designs and one reprised treatment that truly lets you make it your own.

Wide variety

Following in the footsteps of the original collection, two prized handle ingredients return.

It starts with the raw brass liners, which are not only super sturdy but will patina beautifully over time.

With its nautical vibe, The Vessel perhaps most resembles something a sailor might have carved centuries ago.

Second is the ethically sourced ox bone inlay, which nods to classic scrimshaw materials while providing a canvas for enchanting artwork.

Like before, one of the treatments, dubbed The Vessel, has a nautical theme that’s perhaps closest to what you might see back in the day.

However, two others diverge wildly from the tradition. One, appropriately called The Wildcat, depicts a spotted beast in a fully extended leaping pose.

The Rancher gives the scrimshaw style a distinct Western spin.

The other, The Rancher, recalls pulpy Western-themed comics of yesteryear.

The final offering is the only one to return from the original collection. Called The Blank Canvas, it has no markings on either side, inviting the owner to scratch out their own unique design with the included carving tool and ink.

Supplemental specs

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten this far into a knife story without mentioning the blade, but perhaps that is fitting, as it is kind of the least interesting part of this knife.

The classic drop point measures 2.35 inches and, if it follows the original collection’s formula, will be made of Swedish Sandvik 14C28N Steel.

The Wildcat aligns perfectly with the drop-point blade, featuring nail nick deployment and a non-locking slip-joint.
WESN

This wallet-friendly knife steel offers respectable edge retention and corrosion resistance, making it a reliable everyday option for tackling reasonable cutting jobs, just nothing too ambitious.

In line with all P&Co collaborations — and Henry knives in general — these knives feature non-locking slip-joints, ensuring their UK legality.

In a way, The Blank Canvas is one of the most customizable knives ever made. No wonder they brought it back.

The open length is 5.35 inches, the weight is 2 ounces and the closed length is 3 inches, meaning more than 2 inches of canvas to etch your own personal passion project.

Pro tip: If you spring for The Blank Canvas, you can make one side your own before passing it down to the next generation to style up the other. (Hopefully not with some K-Pop Demon Hunters nonsense, but hey, who are we to judge?)

Availability and pricing

All four knives in the Scrimshaw Henry Collection 2.0 will be available for purchase at a price of $180 this Friday, December 12, beginning at 10 a.m. EST. Once they sell out, they’re gone for good.
