Yeti Downsizes Its Award-Winning Ranchero EDC Bag

In 2024, Yeti acquired cult-favorite travel and outdoor bag brand Mystery Ranch for a whopping $36.2 million. Together, the brands’ first project was a limited-edition backpack called the Bozeman.

By 2025, the EDC and travel bag had evolved into a permanent part of Yeti’s catalog, renamed the Ranchero.

Now, that same bag has gone through another evolution, getting smaller and speedier without losing its stellar construction and feature set in the Yeti Ranchero Crossbody.

The original Yeti Ranchero is a full-sized backpack. At the moment, there are four sizes, ranging from 12 liters to 27 liters, but they all share the same overall format and construction, including a signature three-zipper opening (a fan-favorite holdover from Mystery Ranch).

The Ranchero Crossbody, perhaps unsurprisingly, takes the same overall construction, design and feature set ethos and pares it down to a far more compact, entirely new silhouette: a crossbody bag (or sling or fanny pack, depending on who you ask). While they share functional, material and stylistic elements, they also vary greatly.

So, let’s start with the similarities. Like the Ranchero backpack, the crossbody is built from the same 700-denier Yeti TuffSkin nylon, designed to shrug off abrasions and moisture and resist tears and punctures. It also gives the crossbody version of the bag the same clean, minimalist appearance as its larger sibling.

It also gets a heavy‑duty nylon base with a TPU coating, offering extra protection to the part of the bag that most often touches the ground. And it has the same 210-denier ripstop liner on the inside. Put plainly: this bag is smaller, but it’s built just as tough and durable.

Crossbody, sling or fanny

Beyond its styling and construction, this is where the Ranchero Crossbody begins to diverge from its backpack sibling. As its size dictates a different approach, it doesn’t have a triple-zip.

Instead, it features a wildly different magnetic closure, boasting encased chain magnets that run the full length of the opening. They’re secure in transit, but a proper tug of the pull tab, and you’ll gain full access to the interior.

While the interior is similarly well-organized, the format is clearly different from the backpack. It has a bevy of smaller organizational pockets that suit everything you might haul, from your daily EDC to your passport and much more. There’s even a keychain lash for your, well, keys (and keychain tools).

Instead of padded shoulder straps, the crossbody has a single, adjustable 38-millimeter webbing strap, although the hardware is similar to the backpack’s. This allows it to be worn over the shoulder, across the torso or as a fanny pack — you can pick whichever works best for you, given the circumstances.

Finally, the capacity: the Ranchero Crossbody is a mite smaller than even the tiniest Ranchero backpack, clocking in at 4.0 liters for the larger size and only 1.0 liter for the smaller one. Both are available in a bevy of colors, including seasonal options (that will undoubtedly change each quarter).
