To stave off the cold on a blustery day, few accessories beat the performance of a natural-fiber scarf. Wools and cashmeres wrapped closely around your neck work in tandem with a coat and hat to closely guard your body heat. Scarf variety is a bit foreboding — material, thickness, pattern and length — but once you settle on a scarf that suits your aesthetic, there are only a few ways of wearing it. Here are three simple tips.
The Wrap
This is a classic, functional way to wear a scarf. It works with scarves of various materials and lengths.
Step One. Drape the scarf around your neck leaving the left side shorter than the right.
Step Two. Wrap the longer end around your neck once so both ends fall vertically on your chest.
Step Three. If your scarf is longer, repeat step two.
The Loop
Sophisticated and simple, this way of wearing a scarf works best with scarves that are short-to-medium lengths.
Step One. Fold the scarf in half horizontally and drape it around your neck.
Step Two. Pull the ends of the scarf through the loop created by the fold.
Step Three. Adjust the position of the loops by continuing to pull the ends of the scarf towards the floor.
The Single Knot
This way of wearing a scarf an appear the most formal, and works with short-to-medium lengths scarves.
Step One. Drape the scarf around your neck so both ends are even.
Step Two. Cross the right end over the left side, and bring it under making a single knot.
Step Three. Hold onto the left end and pull the right, moving the knot closer to your neck.
Step Four. Adjust so that the right end falls directly over the left.
