When Team USA arrived for the opening ceremony at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea, each athlete beat the chill with a Ralph Lauren jacket filled with cutting-edge warming technology. The down-filled jackets, warm enough on their own, were further heated using special silver ink printed on the interior, and connected to a battery pack that warmed each player to customizable specifications.
A year later, the iconic American clothing brand has brought the same technology to two new jackets, just in time for the coldest part of winter. On January 24, Polo will start selling an update of its Polo 11 jacket — a highly collectible ’90s release originally created as an homage to pressure suits worn on NASA missions throughout the 20th century — as well as the new Polo Glacier jacket, available in silver and navy. Both feature the heated ink, developed in collaboration with DuPont. Wearers can power the extra warmth with a special-edition Mophie battery pack, and can also select a level of warmth with the new RL Heat app. These innovations take the jacket a few steps beyond what even the most advanced down-filled parkas offer in terms of warmth.
