Alex Mill is refreshingly straightforward with its product descriptions. Rather than puffing up garments with flowery, vague language, pertinent details like fabric composition and fit are laid out in succinct, plain language.

Many items even feature a brief note from the brand’s design team explaining the inspiration behind it, providing interesting context. For example, the new Micah Parka is apparently derived from the N-2B jacket issued by the US Army during World War II.

I see a closer resemblance to the CWU-45 flight jacket, another US Military-issue nylon bomber that featured prominently in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick.

The deciding factor for me is the huge flap pockets placed at hand level, which, along with a collared neck, help distinguish the CWU-45 from the ubiquitous MA-1 bomber jacket. Of course, the CWU-45 doesn’t have a hood, while the N-2B does.

Stepping out of the US Mil-Spec weeds, the Micah Parka is a versatile and highly functional winter jacket that offers enough insulation and weather resistance to get you through the coldest months in most places.

It is built from the same type of 100-percent nylon shell used by the US Armed Forces for decades. In a twist that offers more civilian comfort, the onion-quilted lining is made from a 50/50 polyester and viscose blend that is silky smooth.

The jacket is only available in a faded olive green, another connection to its military inspiration, but the color is so universally complementary that an additional option isn’t necessary.

Defense against the elements

The onion-quilted interior of the Micah Parka is insulated with a polyester fill, which may not be the most environmentally responsible option, but it is efficient, lightweight and affordable.

The zipper front features a storm flap that extends above the chin and is integrated into the storm hood. The hood is adjustable with two elastic drawstrings and features the same soft quilted lining and insulation as the body.

While the large exterior pockets resemble those on the CWU-45 bomber, Alex Mill upgraded the design by layering additional welted hand pockets on top. The jacket also features two interior zipper pockets.

Open cuffs are a departure from the elastic variety found on all of the military jackets listed above. However, the cuffs on the Micah Parka are equipped with adjustable snap tabs.

It is a similar case with the waist, where a traditional ribbed elastic design is replaced with an adjustable drawstring with clasps on each side. This allows the jacket to drop below the waist and makes it adaptable to a broader range of temperatures.

Availability and price

Whether the Micah Parka is a winterized version of Maverick’s CWU-45 or an N-2B adapted for civilian use is something for clothing nerds like myself to dwell on. The fact of the matter is that Alex Mill built an outstanding all-purpose winter jacket based on mid-century US Military designs, and — most importantly — is selling it for a bargain price.

The Micah Parka is available now from Alex Mill for $350. Based on the amount of use you can get out of this jacket, that is an absolute steal.
