It’s nearly impossible to pick the “coolest Barbour jacket,” but, gun to my head, I might go with a 2020 collaboration with Noah.

The New York label decorated the iconic Bedale jacket in a patchwork of colors, assigning a different hue to each waxed canvas panel. Of course, the price was elevated, and the jacket sold out quickly.

Noah’s creative take on the Bedale jacket is currently selling for between $1,500 and $2,000 on the secondhand market, and there aren’t many to choose from.

However, Nordstrom Rack has a non-collaborative version of Barbour’s patchwork waxed canvas jacket that some might find even more appealing. It features a broader assortment of colors, and the dark purple sleeve is replaced with a neutral brown.

Best of all, the consignment retailer is offering this eye-catching Bedale for half off, bringing the sticker price to $249.

Patching it together

Barbour’s Bedale jacket, along with similar designs like the Ashby and Beaufort, has been fashionable since the 1980s and is nearly universally admired. The waxed canvas is durable and weather-resistant, and the British barn jacket design has an elevated status on par with topcoats and trench coats.

The downside of sustained popularity is a certain staleness. Standard-issue Bedales are never lame, but they aren’t exciting.

As it turns out, color blocking is the best way to spice up the tried-and-true design. Barbour has applied the individually colored panel technique to many jackets (mainly in the women’s department), but this version is especially bold.

Brown, olive drab and navy make up most of the panels, while a dark blue and green tartan waxed canvas is used on all four external pockets.

The collar is brown with an almost burnt orange hue, a rare selection from Barbour’s archive. Even more obscure is the bright blue and black tartan used for the jacket’s lining, which creates an extra pop of color with the cuffs turned up.

The solid brass snaps stand out with a golden tone, and a neon green thread is used for the stitched brand insignia on the left pocket flap.

It is easily one of the most eye-catching men’s jacket designs that Barbour has ever produced without collaborating with another brand.

Availability and price

The Barbour Patchwork Bedale is available now from Nordstrom Rack for $249. That’s a steal for any of the British brand’s waxed canvas jackets, but it’s especially mind-blowing for one this covetable.

Sizes 34 to 42 are still available, but there likely aren’t many in stock. When a unique product like this trickles through Nordstrom’s inventory onto “The Rack’s” website, it’s usually slim pickings.
