The best daily-wearing shoulder season jackets do a little of everything without looking like they do too much.

You want enough cargo space without being overwhelmed with pockets, weather resistance without looking too technical and, above all, a jacket that complements everything in your closet.

Todd Snyder checks every box with the new Short Stable Jacket, a hybrid that borrows elements from a list of fall outerwear classics.

It has raglan shoulders and is cropped at the waist like a Harrington jacket. The pointed collar has corduroy lining and a throat latch like a barn jacket. And it has welt hand pockets and a storm flap like a topcoat.

The king of American menswear blends these disparate elements like a master mixologist. Just as it transcends outerwear categories, the Short Stable Jacket spans all levels of formality, complementing just about any man’s wardrobe.

However, the most intriguing aspect of the Short Stable jacket is its fabric. From a distance or in online product images, it may appear to be velvet or even suede, but it is, in fact, denim.

Yup, it’s a denim jacket

The Short Stable Jacket offers a fabric I’ve never seen before. It is flocked denim, which means an electrostatic process aligns loose yarns vertically, creating a soft, velvet-like feel.

Typically, flocked fabrics use artificial textiles like polyester, but this one is 100% cotton. Full details on the fabric are not given, but considering it is called denim, I assume the top layer is combed to create the loose fibers for flocking.

Regardless of how it is done, the result is a rich, layered texture that looks dark brown and exposes sage green undertones. The brand explains that, because it is a denim weave, the indigo base will be exposed as the jacket ages.

Eventually, this all-purpose jacket should develop a patina like a waxed cotton or jean jacket.

Weather or not

The Short Stable Jacket’s practical functionality is based on the storm flap zipper and throat latch. Both can be fastened to create a secure barrier against the wind and cold from the waist to the chin.

The arrangement is similar to that of several Barbour jackets. The collar is corduroy-lined, so it feels soft on the neck, and the throat latch has a snap to secure it under the collar when not in use. The cuffs are also adjustable with snaps to create a secure barrier.

Of course, all those features can be undone to make it a light and breathable jacket. Todd Snyder’s new barn jacket-Harrington hybrid offers all of the styling and protective versatility of classics like the Baracuta G9 and Barbour Bedale that presumably inspired it.

But this intriguing design also stands out as something new, and the fabric alone makes it one of the most interesting jackets debuting this fall.
