Filson’s Most Versatile Bag Has Never Looked Better

Filson’s best travel bag is still in production because the good folks at Huckberry convinced the Seattle outfitter to revive it as an exclusive.

The Dryden Duffle Pack is not only alive but thriving under Huckberry’s stewardship in a handsome new fabric Filson has never used before.

Huckberry

The fabric is a grayish-blue 8.7-ounce 1000D Cordura nylon dubbed Navy Blazer. It is only available in a three-piece collection exclusive to the Austin retailer.

We’ll get to the other two bags below, but the star of the collection is the duffle-backpack hybrid that Filson discontinued, despite being a cult hit and one of the best bags the 128-year-old company ever designed.

The Dryden Duffle Pack gracefully blends elements from three of Filson’s most beloved bags. It has the functionality of the 48 Hour Tin Cloth Duffle Bag, the carrying capacity of the Medium Tin Cloth Duffle Bag and can convert to be worn like the Journeyman Backpack.

Better still, its Cordura fabric offers the same durability and weather resistance of Filson’s famed 14-ounce Tin Cloth waxed canvas at almost half the weight.

The ultimate travel bag

The Dryden Duffle Pack offers 46 liters of carrying capacity, three more than the medium sizes of Filson’s popular Tin Cloth and Rugged Twill duffles. Although all three bags have similar dimensions, the two exterior pockets give the Dryden Duffle Pack the edge.

The Dryden Duffle Pack has a base of 23 inches by 12 inches, with a height of 10 inches. As long as the side compartments are empty and the bag isn’t maxed out, it can pass most airline carry-on luggage constraints.

One of the side pockets is vented to accommodate dirty and/or wet clothes and shoes. The bag also has a padded compartment on the bottom or back (depending on how you wear it) designed to hold a 15-inch laptop.

The definitive feature of the Dryden Duffle Pack is the stow-away backpack straps, which tuck into a zippered compartment on the bottom. When deployed, the straps connect to plastic buckles, and the shoulder strap can be removed.

A navy three-piece

Huckberry offers a set of three Filson Dryden bags in the novel Navy Blazer Cordura nylon. Joining the hybrid duffle are the Dryden Backpack and the Dryden Briefcase.

The 26-liter Dryden Backpack (reviewed here) is another longtime fan favorite that’s easier on the back than Filson’s Tin Cloth and Bridle Leather packs. It has a collapsible back compartment, dual side patch pockets, a roller luggage strap and a slew of internal compartments.

The 14-liter Dryden Briefcase doubles as a work bag and overnight bag. It has a zip-top main compartment, a padded laptop sleeve, internal pockets and two easy-access exterior pockets.

Filson’s Dryden Duffle Pack Hybrid 46L in Navy Blazer 8.7-ounce 1000D Cordura nylon is available now exclusively from Huckberry for $299.

Not only is that an excellent price for a Cordura duffel bag, but it is also one of the best dollar-per-use values for any bag.

To round out the Navy Blazer capsule, the Dryden Backpack and Briefcase are available for $279 and $199, respectively.

Filson Dryden Duffel Pack Hybrid Navy Blazer

This discontinued travel pack was once dubbed “the greatest bag ever made.” Then Filson did the unthinkable. It retired the bag. After years of gaining a cult following on the secondary market, a merchandising manager at Huckberry managed to get Filson to revive the bag in its original glory, and since then, it’s now been made available in new compelling shades including navy.
