The Internet’s Favorite Waxed Canvas Jacket Has a Sequel That Tops the Original

I field-tested the new jacket Flint and Tinder calls “the refined younger brother of our iconic Waxed Trucker.”

Over the past few years, Flint and Tinder has methodically built a reputation as one of the foremost brands for waxed canvas outerwear.

Huckberry’s top in-house brand, which it purchased in 2016, has produced close to a dozen jackets in the coveted water-repellent fabric. One has even built a cult following on par with heritage brands like Barbour, Belstaff and Schott: The Waxed Trucker.

Reproducing the type of viral success achieved by the Waxed Trucker is nearly impossible, and Flint and Tinder has wisely elaborated on its most beloved jacket ever since its 2017 introduction. At the same time, the brand has built a robust collection of waxed jackets around its headline product.

The Austin-based outfitter has produced waxed quilted jackets, waxed barn coats and even a waxed Harrington. But for Fall 2025, the paraffin professionals have daringly released a spiritual follow-up to the internet’s favorite waxed canvas jacket.

The James Waxed Snap Jacket attempts to fill the same niche as its heralded predecessor. It is a lightweight, thinly lined, all-purpose jacket with ample cargo space and an infinitely versatile look.

Huckberry markets the jacket as “the refined younger brother of our iconic waxed trucker,” which a spokesperson revealed was the jacket’s internal shorthand during its development.

They stressed that this isn’t an attempt to replace the Waxed Trucker, which isn’t going anywhere, but a counterpart that satisfies varying tastes and acknowledges an evolving menswear landscape.

One of my favorite details was the overlapping snap cuff.

After field testing The James for a couple of weeks, just as autumn weather crept into the Northeast, it looks like Flint and Tinder’s design team has done it again.

Put me in, coach

The Waxed Trucker was loosely based on the Levi’s Type III jacket, and The James is modeled after an equally iconic and versatile blueprint: the coach’s jacket.

It has a snap front, snap cuffs, an open waist and a pointed collar. Traditional vented hand pockets are bolstered with a suit-style vented chest pocket, a brilliant touch that adds a hint of refinement and provides an ultra-useful storage spot.

The biggest refinement upon a traditional coach’s jacket, aside from the waxed canvas, is the vented chest pocket.

The chest pocket is my favorite spot to stash my sunglasses, but I can easily fit my whole hand in there up to my wrist, so its EDC uses are vast.

Even though it has a snap front instead of a zipper, I suspect Flint and Tinder is referencing James Dean with the jacket’s name. Specifically, his legendary red jacket from Rebel Without a Cause, which is often mis-represented as a Harrington, but is really a zip-front coach’s jacket.

Now, if only Flint and Tinder would make a red version.

Scotland’s best

While the Waxed Trucker is made entirely in America, including sourcing waxed canvas from New Jersey’s Fairfield Textile, The James is produced in a modern international fashion.

Label inside a jacket with the text: "HALLEY STEVENSONS SINCE 1864. MADE FROM LONG LASTING WATER REPELLENT FABRIC BY HALLEY STEVENSONS OF SCOTLAND. CONSCIOUS INNOVATION ORIGINAL CHARACTER ADAPTIVE BY NATURE." Below the text is a small Scottish flag and the words "HOME AND DRY." The jacket fabric is black on the outside and a textured gray pattern on the inside. The jacket has metal snap buttons with the text "FILM AND TINDER.

Flint and Tinder turned to Scotland’s Halley Stevensons, one of the world’s most respected waxed textile mills, for a 12-ounce Dry Finish Waxed Canvas that gives The James a sleeker feel than its predecessor.

The jacket is assembled in Indonesia, but this is no detriment. I wasn’t able to find so much as a loose stitch on the jacket. Every snap was secure with no rattle, and nothing was off about the fit.

More companion than successor

After about a dozen wears, I can confirm that The James is just as functional and versatile as the Waxed Trucker. Flint and Tinder clearly poured everything they learned from eight years of making a cult classic jacket into this new design.

If you’ve owned a Waxed Trucker for a long time, it’s an easy transition because the fit is nearly identical, and all external pockets are in the same location.

Despite looking more streamlined, The James has more cargo space, with a bigger external chest pocket and an additional internal pocket for a total of five.

Workwear is making a strong comeback in 2025, and Western apparel is as popular as ever. I’m a big fan of both, but I still find the look of The James more appealing than the Waxed Trucker.

As small as it is, the vented chest pocket makes all the difference for me. It adds a layer of functionality not typically found in a coach’s jacket, and its resemblance to a suit pocket is a flourish that really works for me.

I shouldn’t like this jacket more than its incredibly popular predecessor, but I do, and it is now my go-to, all-purpose jacket.

Availability and price

The Flint and Tinder The James Waxed Snap Jacket is available now from Flint and Tinder for $198.

It is available in black, navy blue and chocolate brown, but judging by the number of colors released in the Waxed Trucker, there are surely more to come.

A note on fit: If you’ve ever worn or tried on a Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker, The James’s fit is nearly identical. Some customer comments claim it is too loose and boxy, but I found the opposite. It is pleasantly form-fitting, just like the Waxed Trucker has famously always been.
