Until now, Period Correct has been more the manifestation of an obsession than a conventional brand. Specifically, founder Bryan Calvero’s obsession with automotive culture from the 1950s through the 1970s, along with the clothing, watches, architecture and design filling out that particular nostalgic space.

It began in 2015 as a lifestyle brand with a single boutique in Costa Mesa, California. Collaborations with brands like Porsche and Bridgestone Golf garnered a cult following that bridged automotive and fashion cultures.

Calvero has now distilled that broad, amorphous obsession into a dedicated clothing brand that gives new meaning to the brand name. With the launch of Collection 1, Period Correct is reborn (the brand’s Instagram account was even scrubbed to prove it), dedicated to producing high-quality basics that are, well, period correct.

The term “period correct” refers to any automotive part added to a vintage vehicle that was produced in the same year as the vehicle, or close enough to match the appropriate aesthetic.

In a broader context, it can refer to art, design, music or clothing from the specific year or era in question. For this relaunch, it means t-shirts and sweatshirts that match the look, fit and, most importantly, quality of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Sweating it out

The standout piece of Collection 1 is the After Hood, a style of hoodie with two separate patch hand pockets. This alternative to the standard kangaroo pocket variety is rarely seen today, but was popular in the 1960s.

Period Correct’s version features a hood with an open neck, making it easy to put on and take off on the go.

The Classic Crew demonstrates the brand’s attention to detail by incorporating a genuine ribbed V-insert stitched into the neck, below the collar, allowing the neckline to flex without ripping.

This small detail is often faked or omitted by modern brands to save on manufacturing costs, but was a staple of mid-century sweatshirts.

It is also included on the After Hood.

Rounding out the sweats line is the Split Pocket Hoodie, a tried-and-true hooded sweatshirt with a loose, slouchy fit. The name refers to a vertical seam stitched down the middle of the pocket, creating two separate sections.

All three sweatshirts are made from 19-ounce pure cotton fleece and pigment-dyed to achieve a vintage-inspired, washed-out black color.

Teed up

The other half of Collection 1 consists of two types of t-shirts, with both available in black and white. Fabric weight and collar construction are the two factors differentiating the designs.

The Classic Tee is made from lightweight 9-ounce cotton and has a traditional ribbed ribbon collar, as you would find on most undershirts.

The Cap Collar Tee is a bit heavier with a 12-ounce jersey cotton. It features a wrapped collar made from a heavier, ribbed cotton that will hold its shape better over time.

Both tees have a vintage, boxy fit and wide sleeves.

Availability and pricing

Period Correct’s Collection 1 is available now online and at the brand’s boutique in Costa Mesa. Every item is produced in Los Angeles from 100-percent cotton, and prices range from $70 for the Classic Tee to $180 for the Afterhood.
