Relwen’s Ultra-Cozy, Affordable Jacket Is as Functional as It Is Eye-Catching

If there is one legendary creature that looks like it would make a nice winter jacket, it’s the yeti.

The Ohio-based clothing brand turned the pile all the way up on this fleece mountaineering jacket, resulting in a fuzzy texture that resembles an unshorn sheep — or, on the back of a person trudging through the snow, a yeti.

Unlike cheap teddy jackets, the Abominable Hood Jacket’s eye-catching fluff is both fun and functional. It is insulated and durable enough to handle long winter strolls and cold-weather hiking.

The Abominable Hood Jacket comes in a yeti white, called Natural, and a light brown, dubbed Bark, that more closely resembles Bigfoot. (Though, contrary to what Rudolph would have you believe, Sherpa traditions in the Himalayas also describe the yeti as a dark-furred creature.)

Relwen’s high-pile sherpa jacket looks like Yukon Jack himself designed it.

The white fleece is lined with a gray-blue nylon woven taslan around the hood, cuffs and waist that resembles the hands, skin and face of the Abominable Snow Monster from the 1964 stop-motion classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Despite its resemblance to Rudolph’s foe-turned-companion, the Abominable Hood Jacket’s shell is a 515gsm high-pile fleece made of 70 percent polyester and 30 percent wool.

By including a healthy portion of wool, the legendary outdoor textile first devised by Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard and his wife increases its insulation factor and takes on a more natural look.

The cheeky yeti fur gag wouldn’t hold up if it were pure polyester — that touch of real animal fur allows a suspension of disbelief.

This comfy, fun jacket is about as warm as I imagine real yeti fur would be. A high-neck storm hood, elastic cuffs and a drawstring waist can be tightened up to lock in more body heat and keep out cold air and strong winds.

A mountaineering classic

The Abominable Hood Jacket’s simple retro design is based on mountaineering outerwear from the 1960s, when the outdoor apparel industry began adopting synthetic materials.

Adding to the mysterious vibe, it looks like a jacket that someone would have worn to scale Mt. Everest in the mid-twentieth century, only to be abducted by an unidentifiable figure and never seen again.

Details like the old-fashioned drawstring hood with leather cord washers and pig nose stoppers on the hood and waist cords are authentic to the era.

However, the polyester mesh lining is a more modern innovation that helps regulate body temperature and breathability.
