A good travel blazer walks a fine line between classic tailoring and sloppy athleisure. It has to be comfortable but flattering, allow for mobility but retain its shape and complement a wide range of outfits.

One company that has nailed the balancing act is Relwen. In fact, the Ohio-based outfitter got the formula just right years ago and has been producing the same blazer in myriad fabrics ever since.

Relwen’s blazer has many names, but they are all based on the same ultra-functional design.

Here’s where it gets a little confusing. Relwen has produced the same ultra-functional blazer for years, but has changed up the name when using different fabrics.

For example, Huckberry is offering a generous discount on Relwen’s Heritage Trap Blazer and Flyweight Flex Blazer during its Cyber Week Sale, but they are essentially the same jacket in two very different fabrics.

The crucial feature of Relwen’s blazer design is an abundance of easy-to-access pockets.

The design continuity is a prime example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Relwen’s blazer is optimized for travel and everyday use, featuring easy-to-access pockets without resembling an M65 jacket or fishing vest.

The design is based on early twentieth-century fielding or hunting suit jackets, which followed tailoring conventions but featured large pockets, often including a game pocket in the back, and were buttoned up to the chin with a throat latch.

Relwen’s modern interpretation retains the balance between an elevated look and enhanced functionality, borrowing details like the throat latch and game pocket, but makes it more approachable. Rather than making the blazer from thornproof wool or heavyweight tweed, it is made from stretch cotton chino or a wool-nylon blend.

Relwen also guts the stuffy old-fashioned fielding jacket design, making its blazer with no canvas structuring layer and minimal lining on the sleeves, shoulder and lower back. This keeps the design as breathable, lightweight and flexible as possible.

The Flyweight Flex Blazer, Heritage Trap Blazer, and other Relwen jackets have functional two-button cuffs, which make the cuffs easy to fold up and look better than decorative buttons.

Cargo space

What really makes Relwen’s blazer design one of the best options for travel and daily use is the exceptional cargo space, and, more importantly, the fact that it doesn’t look like it’s loaded with extra pockets.

Any decent blazer has ample pocket space, featuring at least three external and two internal pockets. Relwen enhances the carrying capacity by making the inner pocket easily accessible with a vertical zipper, and adds a small game pocket to the back featuring a snap closure.

The external pockets are patch-style, meaning they don’t feel bulky when actually used. The game pocket is easily accessible with one hand, although I wouldn’t recommend placing anything valuable in there while traveling.

Whether you’re looking for a go-to travel blazer, work blazer or elevated daily jacket, Relwen offers one of the best designs on the market. It offers modern comfort and functionality expertly blended with respectable casual suiting.
