Whether it’s talking watches over at Hodinkee or wearing head-to-toe Visvim, John Mayer has a passion for men’s clothing and he’s unafraid to nerd out about it. His latest sartorial endeavor is an unofficial sneaker collaboration with Nike. Instead of working with directly with the brand, Mayer designed an Air Max sneaker of his own through NikeiD and bought as many pairs of it as he possibly could. Enter the Air Max 90 Air Mayer, which drops on July 29th and will be available on his website.
Mayer’s sneaker is a chunky, speckle-soled spectacle with only a neon green Max Air bubble breaking up the sneaker’s gray on gray on gray body (with a little black for contrast). These muted grays evoke the lovable banality of reliable workhorse sneakers from the ’90s. Meanwhile, sneakerheads will fawn over your shoes. Stealth move, John.
