If you’re worried about the impact plastic and rubber flip-flops can have on the environment, you’re in luck. Allbirds, the purveyors of those ultra-comfortable wool sneakers people love to travel in, just dropped a sandal made primarily from sugar cane. The Sugar Zeffer features a sole made from SweetFoam, which the company is billing as the world’s first carbon-negative EVA. (Without turning this into a chemistry lesson, EVA — or Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate — is the material that gives running shoes and other sneakers use to get their signature bounce and comfort.)
The comfortable new flip-flops will set you back $35 (and you can add custom straps for another $15). But that’s a small price to pay for knowing that when you’ve worn them out, they won’t end up doing harm to another living creature.
