Apple will officially release its next-generation operating system, iOS 10, on September 13. At Apple’s developer’s conference, and reiterated when the iPhone 7 was announced, CEO Tim Cook said that iOS 10 would be “biggest release ever” for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch users. Among a few other major updates to Messages, Siri, Apple Music, Apple Pay and Control Center, Apple will also introduce its “Home” app, and with it you’ll be able to control most smart devices in your home.
The Home app will be able to control all HomeKit-enabled products. (On the box of any compatible smart device, you’ll see a sticker that says “Works with Apple HomeKit.”) If you recall, Apple first released HomeKit two years ago, at their 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference, so some of the biggest companies in the field (i.e. Honeywell, Lutron, Philips, August, Canary, Insteon) have had time to plan for this release. Bottom line: many of the smart devices you already own will sync with iOS 10’s Home app (with the notable exception of Nest). If you’re looking for other smart devices, we’ve got you covered. Here are our favorites.

Also note that leading home builders, such as Brookfield Residential, KB Home, Lennar Homes and R&F Properties, will begin integrating many of these HomeKit devices into new homes later this year.
