It’s taken a while, but Canon is finally taking mirrorless seriously. The camera giant just announced the Canon EOS M5, available this November. It’s an SLR mirrorless camera that’s poised to compete against Panasonic’s GX85, the Fujifilm X-T2 and Sony’s a6300.

The M5 isn’t Canon’s first foray into mirrorless SLRs — they’ve made five others — but it’s their first with a viewfinder. And it’s their most feature-packed: the camera has a sensor (24.2MP APS-C) similar to their 80D DSLR, and the impressive (and fast) dual pixel autofocus system that Canon featured in their EOS 7D Mark II.

For Canon enthusiasts — and there are plenty — it means that Canon, and their massive R&D department, are truly embracing mirrorless. That said, the M5 won’t immediately oust the X-T2 and the a6300, which both capture 4K video (the M5 doesn’t) and have more impressive continuous shooting capabilities.

The EOS M5 is expected to cost $980 (body only), or $1,100 with a 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens kit.
