Just this summer, the esteemed cultural anthropologists at The New York Times noted that the style world may have lost sight of the irony that saturates Mary Harronโ€™s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellisโ€™sย American Psycho.

A newly revealed 25th Anniversary Edition of the movie can’t be accused of making the same gaffe, unless you believe Patrick Bateman’s new influencer status is responsible for Gen Z’s and other generations technology-rebuking obsession with physical media these days too.

Where Did You Get That Album?

The inspiration for the 25th Anniversary edition’s fictional album artwork is clear. Sports – shown above – was the third album by American rock band Huey Lewis and the News, released on September 15, 1983. And as anyone whose watched American Psycho knows, Patrick Bateman was a fan.

The upcoming collection, set to go on sale on December 9th, 2025, wryly nods to Bateman’s obsession with physical media via mixture of nostalgic details and tongue-in-cheek jokes that’ll please any fan of 80s and 90s physical media, let alone the movie.

The genius of the release starts with its packaging and presentation.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray comes in a collectorโ€™s box featuring Christian Bale’s blood-crazed grin that contains a classic CD jewel case directly parodying one of Batman’s professed favorite musical artists – Huey Lewis and the News.

White box set with a business card labeled "Patrick Bateman, Vice President" and a red streak leading to a man in a black coat dragging a body.
Beyond the movie itself, the collector’s edition includes a few small movie callback props including a set of business cards, a few of which, might even have a watermark.

Fans are also treated to replica business cards and in-world extras like a fake credit card – complete with the movie’s famously surreal ATM prompt – and even a Blockbuster membership card.

No Need to Return This Tape

For those truly invested in 90s media nostalgia, there’s even an American Psycho VHS – Be Kind, Rewind Edition.

Both editions also naturally pack loads of content extras such as commentaries, legacy featurettes, deleted scenes, and a 25th anniversary Q&A with director Mary Harron.

In short, either version should easily stand as the definitive edition of the film for cinephiles, at least until the Criterion Collection gets its act together and adds Harron’s film.
