Yes, it can be done, but avoid the big, chunky submersibles. A vintage-style diver is what you’ll need to pull the look off well — something slim to fit under a jacket sleeve and simple to not draw attention to itself.
Christopher Ward’s latest diver seems to be the perfect fit. The watch isn’t an homage to any specific watch, but rather an amalgamation of the archetypal design elements that characterize the many great divers of the 1960s: the thin bezel, bubble crystal, unprotected crown and faded lume. More importantly, it’s a very well-proportioned watch. It uses a Swiss-made, hand-winding movement to achieve a very slim profile, and at 41mm in diameter, it is a solid middle ground between the smaller diameters of vintage watches and large modern ones.
