Panerai Introduces Another Entry-Level Watch with an In-House Movement

It comes with an in-house movement, a classic design and a relatively low asking price.

When it rains Panerais, it pours: just as Panerai’s new California dial Lunimor came to light yesterday, the brand has also taken the wraps off a duo of new entry-level watches. Called the Radimoir Logo collection, the watch shares much in common with the Luminor Logo collection that debuted at SIHH back in January.

So what’s that mean? For starters, you get the same in-house movement: the P.6000, a hand-winder with a three-day power reserve and an optional small-seconds sub-dial at the nine o’clock position, which is a solid step up from previous Logo models using an ETA-based ebauche. The movement is housed in a 45mm version of the Radiomir case that’s rated water-resistant to 100 meters, and the dial is straightforward, using painted-on numerals in lieu of the brand’s iconic “sandwich” setup. The only real adornment is the OP logo at the bottom, a reference to the first Panerai sold to the public back in the early ’90s.

In many ways, the Radiomir Logo Collection represents something of a return to those days, when the watchmaker was making simple and handsome tool watches, whereas the brand has lately dabbled in high-end materials and intricate complications, and while I wouldn’t expect this to change anytime soon, the addition of a more affordable, pared-down model is welcome. In fact, the new Radiomir is poised to be the entry-point into the Panerai range, with a starting price of around $4,550 (3,900 Euro).
