The New Seiko 5 Is Still Affordable, Mechanical and Colorful

The Seiko 5 has been an inexpensive watch line for decades — now it’s being reimagined with an inner rotating bezel and dual crowns.

Seiko 5s have always been a terrific “gateway watch” for those first venturing into the realm of mechanical horology — they’re cheap, they’re colorful, they’re mechanical, and they offer a ton of value for money. Now, the Seiko 5 is being reimagined as a dual-crown “diver”-style watch in four different dial configurations. Although modeled after the famous “Super Compressor”-cased divers of the 1960s, these aren’t true divers, as water resistance is only 100m — though that should be plenty for most purposes.

Each new Seiko 5 reference is 42.5mm in diameter by 12.3mm tall with a 22mm lug width, so there’s no denying that the line has been modernized with respect to proportions. As with most two-crown watches, the crown at 2 o’clock controls the inner rotating bezel, while the crown at 3 is for time-setting. The 5 uses the Seiko 4R36 automatic movement with day-date complication and hacking seconds.

According to our friends at Worn & Wound, who are die-hard Seiko fans and thoroughly knowledgable, the new Seiko 5 is available in four distinct dial configurations, including the reference SRPB25 with black dial, red and blue bezel and stainless steel bracelet; the reference SRPB27 with black dial, gray and black bezel and stainless steel bracelet; the reference SRPB29 with black dial, red and black bezel and stainless steel bracelet; and the reference SRPB31 with black dial, orange and black bezel and black rubber strap.

Amazon seems like the best place to pick one of these up at the moment (as is often the case), though keep in mind that this means prices will fluctuate on a sometimes daily basis. As it stands now, prices begin at around $164 for the rubber-strapped model and go up to $304 for the black-and-grey dialed model on steel.
