Silver Dials & Steel Bracelets Offer New Looks for Panerai

These Panerai Luminor Marina timepieces with silver dials and bracelets change up the aesthetic of an iconic dive watch.

Panerai has just announced two new additions to the Luminor line, dubbed the Luminor Marina PAM 977 and PAM 978. With their vertically brushed silver dials and steel bracelets, they stand out as something relatively unusual for the brand known for its consistent aesthetic.

The two references are very similar and contain the same movement, but differ in size and water-resistance rating. The PAM 977, which is 42mm wide and water-resistant to 100m, continues Panerai’s recent trend of shrinking its cases somewhat to more moderate sizes. The PAM 978 is more in line with standard Panerai sizing at 44mm wide and features 300m of water-resistance. Panerai’s familiar “sandwich”-style dial with a layer of lume visible through cutout indices is replaced here by a more traditional dial with applied markers. Despite all this, the PAM 977 and PAM 978 remain entirely recognizable as iconic Luminor watches.

Both models feature the in-house Panerai P.9010 automatic movement visible through a display case back with 72 hours of power reserve and the handy ability to independently set the hour hand without stopping the movement. The new steel bracelets feature an interesting design in that the links, which are shaped to resemble the Panerai “bridge” crown-lock device, integrate together without the use of screws.

The 42mm Panerai Luminor Marina PAM 977 will carry price of $8,400 while the 44mm PAM 978 will cost $8,500.
