During the time the United States was a major watch-producing nation, Waltham was one of the country’s most significant and prolific watchmakers. Enthusiasts probably most associate the company with its pocket watches, which often contained high-quality, beautifully decorated movements. The company, however, naturally shifted production as mens watches migrated to the wrist, and made a range of sport and dress models over the years. Waltham stopped producing watches in the US in 1957 and moved to Switzerland, and it’s watches from this era that you’ll find below.

One reason that the handsome, Swiss Made mechanical watches below seem so well priced is due to their size, which tend to be on the small side with respect to modern tastes. However, current trends are now moving back away from the “big watch” craze of a few years ago — and the below watches might be smallish in their dimensions, but they’re big on style. The American brand’s name doesn’t draw as much attention as the top Swiss ones everyone knows, either — but even so, these Walthams are priced vert attractively.

Waltham Self-Winding Day Date

What We Like: This is a handsome vintage dress watch with a Swiss automatic movement and a venerable American brand name. The blocky hands and indices are characteristic of the era, and its 35mm width should still be wearable for many modern wrists. You could do a hell of a lot worse for $90.

From the Seller: The watch is in vintage used condition, running and keeping accurate time.

Waltham Dress Watch

What We Like: The full Arabic-numeral indices in a unique font along with a classic handset, including a red arrow-tipped seconds hand, give this watch some character. A gold dial that contrasts with the steel case is another nice touch. At 34mm wide, this leans toward the smaller side but is still perfectly masculine and quite wearable for average to thin wrists. It contains a manually wound Swiss movement inside.

From the Seller: Very good condition but with light surface scratches. None of the chrome has been worn through.

Waltham 1960s Date Window

What We Like: That amazing linen-like dial texture, for one thing. The texture contrasts nicely with a radially brushed bezel and the watch’s otherwise classic looks — and the seller made a nice choice by putting it on a blue strap. At a standard-for-its-time 34mm wide, it’s powered by a manually wound Swiss movement.

From the Seller: Case, dial, and crystal all in excellent condition. Movement winds and runs fine, keeps time.
