Casio has recently used laser engraving to produce awesome effects on its steel-cased G-Shock models. Previously available with a pixelated camo pattern, the newest model applies a bold grid to an otherwise blacked-out design for the classic squarish watch’s steel case. The result is a unique look that fits right in with the model’s 1980s-retro-futuristic personality.
This is only the latest example of the popular Full Metal GMW-B5000 that’s reimagined the plastic 1980s digital icon as a luxury watch in steel (and even gold and titanium). The case features an ion plating to give it its black color, and the grid’s lines are carved into the finish for an effect reminiscent of early video games — or what Casio calls a “time tunnel that connects the past with the future.” As a higher-end product from G-Shock, it includes premium features and tech like Tough Solar (solar charging), Bluetooth integration, and Multi-Band 6 radio-controlled time adjustment.
The grid pattern is mostly on the top of the watch, but continues onto the steel bracelet as well. It’s a relatively involved and refined vision of the classic G-Shock look, but at under $1,000, Casio surely won’t have trouble finding collectors willing to spring for it. Availability isn’t yet announced, but price in USD is around $875.
