Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.
The first watch from the New York-based brand Stella stands out among the endless startups and new microbrands for its unique dial design and textures. Even among all the retro elements being resurrected in today’s watches, Stella is among very few that have realized the appeal of the “linen dial.”
The brand’s debut model is called the Felix, and it comes in no fewer than six variations at launch. Only a couple of them have said fabric-like texture, but they are all in striking colorways with applied indices and tons of detail that help them feel deliberate and interesting. Even if the designs are somewhat busy for an otherwise simple watch, they all remain legible and appear thoughtfully executed.
The 40mm steel case is in line with recently shrinking watch sizes and appropriate for a basic three-hander. Unusually, the middle case of the Felix has a black DLC coating, and the crown is adorned with a star (in different colors, depending on the model). The watch is powered by the Swiss-made STP 1-11 automatic movement, which is becoming a more common movement option for watch brands large and small and is produced by the Fossil Group.
Each variant comes on a leather strap and has the same price of $1,185 — the watches are available for preorder from the brand with shipping expected in June, 2020.
