This Dive Watch Honors the World’s Oldest International Sporting Trophy

Omega’s new Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition celebrates their status as Official Timekeeper of America’s Cup 2021 in New Zealand.

Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.

“The oldest trophy in international sport,” America’s Cup is a regatta held between a defender and one or more challengers on state-of-the-art yachts, which will take place next in 2021 in New Zealand. And for the third time in its 36 editions dating back to 1851, the competition is featuring Omega as its official timekeeper.

As part of its partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand, Omega has released a new dive watch, dubbed the Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition. Featuring a 42.5mm stainless steel case, special ceramic dive bezel with regatta countdown timer and the America’s Cup logo on the sapphire case back, the LE is powered by the Master Chronometer Calibre 8900.

The Calibre 8900 is a Master Chronometer-certified movement with a co-axial escapement, silicon balance spring, and double barrels that provide 60 hours of power reserve. The movement, which is visible via a transparent case back, additionally provides for a date function visible at 3 o’clock on the dial. This robust calibre, in combination with a beefy case and a helium escape valve, makes for a serious dive watch, indeed, even if its intended purpose is use above the waves on a 75-foot, state-of-the-art monohull.

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition, which is presented on a rubber strap, is limited to 2,021 pieces and is available for pre-order for $7,050.
