Indie Swiss watchmaker Baillod — stylized as BΛ1110D — has only been around since 2019, but Thomas Baillod’s family has been in the horology business since 1775.

Honoring that legacy, the brand has meticulously reproduced a 19th-century pocket watch bearing the family name on its dial as a modern dress watch. The faithfully historical dial bears a striking resemblance to one of the most revered luxury watch brands, but comes at a much more affordable price.

Baillod

The Baillod Chapter 8 Family Legacy Special Edition is based on a pocket watch created in the late 1800s by Charles Baillod. Liliane Murenzi, the brand’s Senior Designer, reinterpreted the design, retaining as much detail as possible, while adding some artistic embellishments.

A thin railroad minutes track runs along the dial’s edge, encircling a narrow Roman numeral hour markers. At the center are Breguet-style hour and minute hands, with a small seconds dial below.

Dial updates include Baillod’s logo in place of the distant relative’s name at 12:00, and a delicate guilloché motif in the center, surrounded by satin brushing along the hour track.

The small seconds dial is nearly identical in size and layout to the pocket watch, but has been moved slightly off-center to 7:00. This is a result of the crown at 4:00, a standard Baillod practice that shifts any dial complications along with it.

Baillod offers the Chapter 8 Family Legacy in a 41mm stainless steel case with a metallic dial and heat-blued hands, or in a soft gold PVD-coated case with the same dial featuring matte black hands.

If I could turn back time

The Baillod family has deep roots in the watch industry, creating a strong backstory for this release, but the watch’s broader appeal lies in its resemblance to an older, far more revered brand.

The Chapter 8 Family Legacy’s resemblance to Breguet goes beyond the “Breguet hands.”
Baillod

The Chapter 8 Family Legacy bears a strong resemblance to Breguet, one of the world’s oldest watchmakers, which pulled off an impressive comeback in 2025. It bears the hour and minute hands named after the 250-year-old luxury brand, but the likeness goes much further.

Baillod added a delicate guilloché motif to the dial’s center, a decorative technique that dates back to the emergence of watchmaking. The off-center small seconds dial cuts into the guilloché pattern with a fine snailing.

Both references feature a black printed hour track and railroad minute track, matched by a black printed seconds track with a matching railroad track. The Breguet hour and minute hands and the small seconds hand are matte black on the PVD gold reference and heat-blued on the steel reference.

The 41mm steel case matches the size and shape of the pocket watch, including a concave bezel that mimics the lip where the antique’s lid closes. It features an onion crown and floral engraving on the casebak ring, both copied directly from the source.

Inside the old-fashioned case ticks a Soprod Caliber C110 automatic movement with a customized branded rotor and decorative finishing visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. It beats at 4Hz and has a modest 40-hour power reserve.

Availability and price

Despite its age and prestige among enthusiasts, Breguet is still a deep-cut watch brand, but if it keeps the momentum going from a strong 2025, demand for affordable stand-ins will grow.

The Baillod Chapter 8 Family Legacy Special Edition comes as close to the top-tier luxury watch brand as I’ve seen for under $1,500. It looks the part with a 19th-century motif and elegant finishing, and backs it up with respectable Swiss mechanics.

Even with the PVD gold finish, both references cost $1,395 and come on a black leather strap with crocodile embossing and a steel butterfly deployment clasp.
