Teddy Baldassarre and Brew Watches both entered the watch game around the same time, tapping into the passionate online community to achieve great success.

In fact, Baldassarre and Brew founder Johnathan Ferrer first crossed paths in 2018, when both gentlemen were starting to make a name for themselves. Seven years later, the internet’s favorite watch expert worked on a redesign for Brew’s flagship chronograph, and it is as handsome and practical as expected.

Anyone who has followed Baldassarre’s rise, learning from his expertise and heeding his advice, understands why the Metric was an ideal choice for his first official watch collaboration.

The watch YouTuber-turned-retailer consistently prioritizes value and affordability to the same degree as craftsmanship and artistic design. Brew is a boutique watch brand with the same values, offering most of its watches for under $500.

I don’t know Baldassarre personally, but having watched countless hours of his YouTube channel, I can assume that any watch he designed would be classically handsome, have daily wearability and be affordable to most people.

The Brew Metric Teddy Baldassarre Edition nails all of those categories and may be the best-looking version of this virally successful meca-quartz chronograph yet produced.

Feeling blue

The Metric Teddy Baldassarre Edition starts with a deep navy blue dial. In a YouTube video detailing the design process, Baldassarre and Ferrer explain that six color schemes were created, and the duo ultimately settled on the most subdued tonal blue.

Compared to popular Metric models, such as the Retro and Super Metric, the dial is smoother. The 60-minute counter is flush against the dial, featuring the brand’s familiar segmentation that alternates between dark blue and powder blue in this case.

The small seconds dial is sunken with a beveled edge, rather than sandwiched, and has a simplified dash every five seconds. The chronograph seconds track is the standard chapter ring with a light blue segment running from 25 to 35 seconds to indicate the ideal espresso shot pull time — a Brew signature.

The handset is new to the Metric collection. Most notably, the signature sewing needle chronograph seconds hand has been replaced with a retro speedometer hand.

The hour and minute hands are still baton-style with Super-LumiNova inserts running through the middle, but have pointed sword tips. The baton hour markers, featuring aligned dots, are marked with the same turquoise-glowing Super-LumiNova.

Notably, the date window has been removed to streamline the dial’s flow.

The caseback, which is secured by four screws, is double-signed with a “Brew/Teddy” etching beside the coffee bean logo.

Outside of the dial, this is a standard Metric, with a 36mm brushed steel cushion case featuring covered lugs, pump chronograph pushers and a sapphire crystal. It runs on the standard Seiko-made Caliber VK68 meca-quartz movement, with a quartz running time and mechanical chronograph module.

Availability and price

The Brew Metric Teddy Baldassarre Edition clearly displays the design input from both parties. It follows the fan-favorite espresso-themed chronograph blueprint, but with a refined veneer that maximizes wearability.

This collaborative design, priced at the standard $475, is not a limited edition. However, it is only being produced in small batches, and the initial run sold out much faster than expected, but Teddy Balassarree offers an email sign-up to be notified when it is restocked.
