The heart of the Eco-Drive is coming out of hiding.

Citizen debuted the first Eco-Drive movement, a quartz engine recharged by any light source, in 1976 and has led the field ever since.

The Japanese watchmaker produces a fleet of affordable options, including high-performance divers and tough-as-nails GMTs. It’s also pushing the boundaries of the technology with collections like the ultra-thin One and the feature-packed Atessa.

But the pinnacle of the Eco-Drive technology comes from The Citizen collection. Powered by the A060 movement, the watches are accurate to within 5 seconds per year without external assistance and are housed in classically beautiful Super Titanium cases.

Along with accuracy and reliability, Citizen is adept at concealing its photovoltaic panels, which absorb light energy. The brand has come a long way from the 1976 Crystron Solar Cell, which had large solar panels at the center of the dial.

However, as part of the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary celebration, Citizen is putting its light-absorbing tech front and center with the new Eco-Drive Photon. The dial contains two decorative features that demonstrate the fascinating properties of light.

The elaborate, layered dial is designed to reveal all the colors of the visible light spectrum on the lower panel by scattering lightwaves. It is housed in a cushion case made from proprietary Super Titanium, featuring rounded outer edges and a smoothed-off octagonal bezel set into the midcase.

It comes on an integrated tapered bracelet with brushed, rounded-off H-links connected by small polished center links. Both the bracelet and case are finished with Duratec titanium carbide for strong scratch resistance.

The Photon also debuts with a DLC black and gilt color scheme.

Along with the metallic version, the Photon debuts with a black DLC case and bracelet featuring a gilt finish on the midcase and dial track. The middle panel of the dial also has a gilt finish, creating a variation of the light show provided by the metallic model.

Playing with the light

The first light trick that the Photon places up your sleeve is based on the “double-slit experiment,” devised by British polymath Thomas Young in 1801. In the most rudimentary terms, it revealed that light travels in waves by breaking them into segments.

The Photon dial uses two layers of vented panels to separate the light that shines through to the second layer. That bottom panel is where the real magic happens.

At the heart of the dial is a plate made of color structure film, which demonstrates another fascinating property of light. Once again, put simply, white light reveals different colors when reflected off different microscopic textures, regardless of the pigment of those textures.

For example, brown and black bird feathers appear blue, purple, yellow or red from certain angles. Color structure film reproduces this phenomenon and reveals a rainbow of colors on the dial’s center, depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

The dial is capped with a dual-spherical sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.

Beneath that ornate dial is a Citizen Caliber E036 Eco-Drive quartz movement, which is accurate to within 15 seconds per month and will run for a year on a full charge.

Availability and pricing

I admit that you would have to turn to the likes of Neil deGrasse Tyson to fully appreciate how the Photon’s dial celebrates the properties of light, but I can tell you that it is fun to look at.

The watch itself is a fully functional sports watch with a lightweight, extremely durable case that offers 50m water resistance and reliable accuracy.

The Citizen Eco-Drive Photon 50th Anniversary will be available in the fall of 2026. The full-metallic reference is priced at $1,000, and the black-and-gilt reference is a bit pricier at $1,200. Both versions are limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide, each with a numbered caseback.
