Citizen is not often a brand that makes major, splashy headlines. Yet, despite its lower overall profile, this outfit has remained a consistent presence in the watch world, especially among Japanese brands.

There’s a litany of reasons this is the case, including the company’s consistent output of reliable, affordable timepieces. If you want a good-looking watch that will get the job done right nine times out of ten, you can’t go wrong with a Citizen.

The brand’s latest, the Citizen Promaster Land GMT, fits that bill to a T. This sneaky, stylish launch has a ton of potential, especially for frequent flyers with a penchant for outdoor adventure.

Land lubber

As its name suggests, this is a GMT watch, meaning it has normal three-handed time-keeping capabilities alongside an extra hour hand for keeping track of time in a second time zone. Of course, an extra hand doesn’t do the trick alone.

To match that extra hour hand, the watch has a fixed bezel with 24-hour markers. As such, the primary timezone can be read by the standard hour hand, whereas the second timezone follows the extra (yellow) hand as it traces around the bezel.

Not only is the textured red dial unique, but it also allows the markings and bold hour markers to stand out, making for an easy read, even on the go.

That makes it ideal for frequent travelers, especially those who go back and forth between two specific places. Of course, it’s got an extra trick up its sleeve for outdoor adventurers, too.

Behind its hands, the dial is a solar panel. And behind that, there’s one of Citizen’s award-winning Eco-Drive movements, a quartz-based mechanism powered by light. That means no batteries, no winding (not even kinetically, no worrying about keeping it ticking, as long as there’s a light source.

Adventure-ready

While the watch style and movement are certainly handy highlights, they alone don’t make this watch worth wearing. For that, you’ll need a bit of style and durability. And the Promaster Land GMT has plenty of both.

Don’t get it twisted; this watch isn’t exactly taking any major swings. Instead, it relies on some old standards, like a clean, brushed stainless steel case and a matching link band. There’s really not a more classic combo, at least as far as all-metal setups are concerned.

However, it isn’t without intrigue, either. Take a closer look at the dial, and you’ll notice it has an interesting, terrain-like texture. It’s almost like a clay tennis court, lending credence to its outdoor adventure-ready capabilities.

Along with its somewhat unique texture and colorway, that dial serves a secondary purpose: it offers excellent contrast for the dial markings, arabic numerals and hands, making it easy to read at a glance or while you’re on the move.

Altogether (and especially considering its price), this is a pretty rock-solid offering.

The watch’s solar-powered movement means that, so long as you have access to light, you never have to worry about a battery, winding, or otherwise.
